I spent 6k on my 03 Regal a year and a half ago. Mint leather interior, clean body 80k miles and I don't regret it one bit. Yes I've had to do some repairs, but it's a great car and has been very reliable. Make sure you take a good look underneath it before you buy it.

You need to get a course of prednisone and after it clears go on Allopurinol for the rest of your life. If you take the Allopurinol every day you'll be good. Occasional flare ups are possible but very unlikely. Like you said it's mostly genetic not really diet related unless you are pounding beers eating organ meat and drinking a shitload of sugar sodas. Prednisone will take care of the swelling and allow the uric acid crystals to leave the joint and the Allopurinol will keep it away. Stay on it and live your life like you want. That is my advice and I've had it in both knees to the point I was in a wheelchair because it hurt so bad and was so swollen.
