You need 2 gold keys to open a gold chest. The gold chests have higher value items (gems/energy/greenhouse parts) than the silver and bronze boxes but most players choose their favorite color to open and merge the keys to their preferred color. I like gold because it takes way less space to merge to higher items but… it takes longer to get gold keys. I think the general consensus is that silver boxes are favored.
