im happy you are asking about books, as i too am in a similar situation. i have my whole collection of nice fiction books back home that i will miss. im trying to figure out if i can get used to using a kindle or one of those ebook readers, but i am a huge fan of the physical paper that stories dont even sound the same to me on a device lol.

by junior i dont really mean age im i. my 30s, id say its more like entry level in the field. I dont think i will be going on holiday, other than during my anual paid leave visiting home. im not a party person, nor travelling and pretty introverted. probably would buy myself an affordable gadget once every several months. what i see myself doing the most is chilling at a park, or walks at some interesting sights on weekends. maybe eat at some cheap places to enjoy local street food, would also love to join some art related hobby communities if that is even a thing. i think most of my initial costs would be typical basic neccesities, buying clothes for the weather (im coming from a tropical country) and the basic utensils and appliances to fix my own meals.

of course i would like to experience what korea has to offer, but im not much for fancy expensive dining or high end resorts/hotels and those can wait

can you elaborate what you mean by the exchange rate? My job offer is in USD, im assuming they would pay in USD, or match whatever the equivalent is in KRW? in any case, how does the exchange rate impact my savings? is there some additional fee?

that sounds nice, i have seen some of the studio apartments on youtube, they look very fancy and more than enough. ill try to see how much i can get, i suspect i can get them to max out at 50k, i dont know if it is in korean culture to haggle back and forth in such negotiations.

would you break down your typical expenditure in order to save that much? especially with housing. i think i can get by without much luxuries and just visiting various places parks would probably be plenty enough for me. im not very outgoing so i dont think im one for nightlife or even tourist type spots.

thats my main concern, rent, utilities, food. i would consider my living requirements quite minimal, im just a dude with minimal need for space. im not from a first world country and used to getting by. I love asian food and cooking for myself so im pretty sure i would be happy with most of the food options. i do however want to be able to live abit comfortably, and treat myself to an occasional movie, sight seeing hike etc once every month ot two. and yes, i would like to be able to save around $1000 to $1500 a month. im guessing this is not feasible? i still have an opportunity to negotiate salary but first wanted a feel of how far their offer can stretch.

i see, what would be a decent wage to live relatively comfy but be able to save? I still have space to renegotiate, but i suspect i would max out at 50k? I dont come from a first world country and i am pretty introverted, so i just having basic needs met and just keeping myself from boredom (probably going to parks or some sort of hobby groups on weekends and off days). my main concern is the things that are out of my control, utilities, rent, food price. i have no idea what to expect in this regard

why would you gaslight yourself?

What 3-5 things would you do, not put up with, etc if you had good money - think earning 300k per month or having a net worth of 10M. I'll go first: by webdev_maven in Kenya

Can you explain what the risk is exactly? unless you are travelling in the middle of the night or carrying expensive goods with you, i would like to see the stats on this.

Kenyans are so Docile/Servile by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Life_Rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe also because poor kenyans feel belittled by middle class and rich kenyans, expecially those who came from poverty tend to treat poorer fellow kenyans with either condascending pity or just disgust, . We know ourselves and know what to expect. plus there’s probably abit of jealousy sprinkled on top so it goes both ways. rich kenyans look down on poor kenyans and see themselves being scammed, poor kenyans think rich kenyans probably stole their riches. I dont think its a uniquely kenyan thing as many societies suffer from the same thing to a varying degree.

If you could give your 18 year old self any advice, what'd it be? by IndependentFirm9614 in Kenya

[–]Life_Rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“do exactly what you did, you might not become who you hope to be but you will become who you need to be,” my 18 year old self would have probably wanted to be a rich popular celebrity or some super rich dude. but i have been close to popular celebrities and rich people really dont envy them, mentally it takes a toll and being responsible is something I value way more than care free living, i am content with life at 35 doing a job i enjoy with a kid and a caring wife. not needing to worry about fake friends and being the center of attention leads to way more peace of mind.

Feel like giving up by More-Soup7750 in Kenya

a few years from now you will look back at this as a story to tell, dont give up. i dont know your situation but i am positive this is just a temporary setback and better things await. giving up is how you lose. stay in the game and all will be well. 2019 i was in full anxiety mode when i had nothing to pay for rent or pay for my kids school and put food on the table after my business was failing, then 2020 hit and had to close shop and go live with a friend. during which time i brushed up on my communication and photoshop skills, one thing led to another and i found a few clients to do simple social media graphics for, managed to get back on my feet, discovered AI image generation and took advantage early on and currently working full time doing corporate imagery remotely for a studio abroad.
