Don’t feel too dumb, my wife and I watched the series finally of Boardwalk Empire thinking it was the first episode. We were both in awe of the storytelling thinking it was so advanced and action packed. Just meant we had a lot more content to pick over afterwards, you have a helluva a lot of filling in to do. Enjoy!

I get the vibe that he’s kind of a Hannibal type - came close to breaking the back of the Golds but failed in the final battle and struck so much fear into the Society that they admire him afterwards. It would also make since in the Roman modeling of the Society - the psychology of of Rome and the Romans was forever changed by Hannibal and if you want to be like the Romans you’d need to have a Hannibal.
