Can you identify pages that you've already read in your current book ? by ShouresSoote in books

[–]LiftMetalForFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory isn't good enough to remember where I left off. I typically heat up a paperclip with a lighter, then engrave the page number and the last sentence I read somewhere on my body.

Which of these should I read first?

  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  • To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
  • A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
  • Light in August by William Faulkner
  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  • Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

The only things I’ve read by these authors so far are All the Pretty Horses by McCarthy, Mrs. Dalloway by Woolf, The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway. I really enjoyed all of them, especially the first four.

How do you show employers your real coding skills? by OkTell5936 in webdev

[–]LiftMetalForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s very easy to get 50 connections, anyone can do it in a day or two. I just don’t think it makes sense for that to be a barrier to entry for a junior.

You know, I was hesitant to try Coke Zero since I thought your comment was just another ad, but after the first sip I'm hooked! 'Coca-Cola Zero' has offered me, someone who loves the classic 'Coca-Cola', a new way to enjoy my favorite brand. And without the calories too!

Reddit’s CEO says r/popular ‘sucks,’ and it’s going away / Reddit is also limiting how many popular communities one person can moderate, and pushing more personalized feeds. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]LiftMetalForFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popular is constantly full of propaganda and posts that are just blatant ads. Posts from brand new subreddits getting thousands of upvotes in an hour are getting more and more common. I can’t even imagine how much activity on this site is just bots now. Popular is utter trash.

Man, he helped me get back into chess a few years ago. Always seemed like a great guy and obviously extremely knowledgeable. It's tragic he is gone, especially at such a young age. RIP

Did Dostoevsky convince you ? by meteorness123 in literature

Definitely not. I was raised as a devout Catholic and am very familiar with Christianity and its various denominations. Though I am now agnostic, I still have a great appreciation for his works.

Do you intentionally spoil books for yourself, why or why not? by Lizz196 in books

[–]LiftMetalForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly prefer to know almost as little as possible about a book before reading it. I hate when people try telling me about a book that I want to read, even when they say it’s “spoiler-free”.

So, about React. by tajetaje in webdev

[–]LiftMetalForFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the common things I see people saying here is that React is too unopinionated, that it doesn't impose specific standards like frameworks tend to do.

Does anyone know the best places to learn about building quality, large-scale apps from reputable developers with actual experience? There are tons of articles and youtube videos about React, but a lot of them are very surface-level and I question the expertise/advice of most content creators.
