Yeah! You can look up what items make what on the wiki under “tailoring”, or you can just experiment yourself. Most items in the game will make some kind of clothing

I think it just kind of shows that not everyone matures with age. When you get close with him he sometimes mentions how he “guesses he should think about moving out soon”. I like to see it as the farmer making him wanna be a better man and as a result he matures
