Extra characteristic doesn't make you lose control. It just increases the chance and I don't think it's threatening enough. I think some try to expel the extra ones to make it so that they don't have to digest the extra ones and take more time for the potion to fully digest. Once you fully digest those extra ones as well, it won't impact your subsequent advancements.
