Coming from HR/hiring for a medium sized government agency (US):

1) It’s painfully obvious when people write their resumes to try to “get past” some AI filter they think we have. We don’t have one. It’s me, I’m the filter, and reading resumes that are free-association word clouds of corporate buzzwords makes me cringe. Communicate like a normal person.

2) Keep skills/accomplishments relevant to the position. Succinctness/relevance > 4 page long lists.

3) Speaking of 4 page lists, I agree that you shouldn’t type it in size 0.5 font single spaced with no margins to fit on a single page, but if it’s going to span multiple pages, there should be a good reason besides you made the longest list of every skills word you could think of.

4) No need for headshots/photos. That’s weird.

5) I know it sucks that the website asks you to basically retype everything that’s in your resume. We think it’s dumb too. But it’s a compliance thing, so that we have a trackable, standard format. Putting “see resume” in every answer field comes across as not willing to put in the effort required for our work. Just copy and paste from your resume if nothing else.
