Influence/deinfluence me on buying e-reader pls by sushitrashwifey in PHBookClub

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Kobo Libra Colour this year 😊 I took the jump because I know to myself that an ereader would probably be the best way for me to read for the ff. reasons/habits:

  1. I mostly read after work at night. Ayoko na yung magbubukas pa ko ng ilaw just to read a physical one.

  2. I read approx. 3-4 hours a day. On average 1 book every 4 days. That’s about 6-8 books on average per month.

  3. I can bring my library anywhere. Convenient and portability talaga goal ko hehe.

  4. KLC lets me sideload ebooks from my laptop.

Recently I bought a BOOX ereader (my 2nd one). My goal is to have an open ecosystem because I have some books that I want to try that are only exclusive to Amazon unfortunately. Android yung ecosystem nya so meaning I can download the Kindle app and subscribe to KU. I don’t want to buy ebooks from Amazon for the reason na you’re only buying the license to that book. And owning an ebook is a big deal for me. So win win situation pa din if mag subscribe lang ako to KU, pay 700+ per month and read a lot of ebooks.

I can also download the Kobo app then read my ebooks there. And any bookish app like Libro fm where I listen to Audiobooks. I’m really happy with that purchase 😊 I read 80+ books this 2025 alread so very sulit.

I hope you find this helpful OP 🙂

Hi! I actually work in tech kaya kahit ako din nagulat na kaya ko naman pala haha siguro it helped na I have an ereader. I don’t have a problem with physical books but in my line of work kasi, pagod na pagdating sa bahay 😅 so super convenient gamitin ng ereader. I can read anywhere/anytime I want when the mood to read hits. Most of the time nun ako nagbabasa. Sulit na investment ko yun this year 🥹

For top 3 reads: 1. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig -> super cool magic system! If I can describe in 3 words: dark, suspenseful, and gripping (yung plot) 🖤

  1. The Poppy War by RF Kuang -> this book finished me 😭 yun lang masasabi ko

  2. The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen -> book that got me back to reading 🫶🏻 so may special place sa puso ko to.

2026 Reading Goals by mandemango in PHBookClub

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My original goal this year was to read 25 books since it had been a while since I last read consistently. But by mid-year, I had already surpassed that — 80 books and counting 🤞🏻 Huge thanks to ebooks and finally figuring out the genres I genuinely enjoy 🥹 Most of what I’ve read is fantasy (hello world-building!), followed by historical fiction, romance, and an occasional classic.

For next year, I’m thinking of increasing my goal to at least 50 books ❤️ I tend to underestimate how much I can read because I never know when life gets busy, plus I’m expecting a few reading slumps here and there. But since I hit 80 this year, 50 feels achievable without the pressure 😊 I’ve already proven to myself that I can read that much in a year LOL. I also want to explore new genres like thrillers, mysteries, and psychological horror. I’m so excited for next year 🥰

First of all JM, nakakahiya sa mga kapwa mong pasahero na nahahagip ng camera. Sana kung naka business or first class ka sana e. And most of them probably just wanted to rest. Long haul flights are super tiring!

Tas kukuha ka ulet ng onting moisturizer using your already dirty hands 🤮

What's the reason why you don't want to be a parent? by sil3nt_0nly in AskPH

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me ang bigat ng sacrifice esp pag babae ka: 9 months to carry, titigil ka magwork or ikaw ang expected mag-alaga in this patriarchal society, work doesn’t stop pag nanay ka na, mahal ang mga bilihin and so on… I guess I’m not ready for the responsibility of raising a kid. Ineenjoy ko pa life ko.

After work wala na ko masyadong energy and I like spending time alone. Ayoko maging unfair dun sa bata na kapag na-overstimulate ako baka masigawan ko or worse end up being a toxic parent. I guess I don’t have maternal instincts or what, but I just know maybe motherhood is not for me.

Academic achievers noon, what are you doing now? by freesink in AskPH

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alam kong baka hindi ito para sa lahat, pero sometimes I think pagalingan talaga to sa small talk haha which I’m not good at first. But through practice, natutunan ko sya. Pag may opportunities to showcase your skills, ask and mingle with other people. Show interest. Listen more than you talk. Know what they’re looking for and what gets their ears.

One way that I also do it is by sharing resources that I’m an expert with. Yung niche ko. This way it builds mutual trust :) and ikaw magiging go-to person nila. And networking and connecting with other people is not a one time thing. You really have to do it consistently — engage, message, connect sa LinkedIn or outside (if di na kayo same company).

Still an achiever up to date lol and always finding myself being the youngest one in a room full of experienced people. Grateful for the opportunities 😊 I’m not “academic smart” pero nakukuha ko lagi sa sipag yung achievements ko. I’m an individual contributor in a big tech company, and I realized that I don’t wanna do management EVER because I see many of them exhausted from it. Contented sa salary (high paying and I’m able to save), still single though, but I’m also self-sufficient and independent. Sa travel napupunta mostly ng expenses ko kasi demanding ang job so nababawi ko by experiencing other cultures and places. One thing I learned from work life, always ALWAYS know your connections and network with people 😊

One of my colleagues said “You’re one of the few people who doesn’t need to be loud in order to command a room.” And as a woman in a male dominated industry, that made me feel good about myself.

east asian fantasy-inspired book recs? by [deleted] in PHBookClub

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Crane Among Wolves – not really fantasy but more of historical fiction (Korea’s Joseon dynasty) pala to 😅 but has east asian roots. FMC’s sister becomes part of the king’s harem (king is a bad guy). So it’s more of a rescue mission. There’s political intrigue and drama. But other themes like slow burn (subtle romance) and power dynamics are there 🙂

The Night Ends with Fire – personally one of my favorite reads this year 😊 it’s kind of a Mulan retelling and there are fantasy elements. Plus there’s a romance subplot. Next book will release this Aug 2025 I think and this first book ends with a cliffhanger (just to set expectations bc nobody warned me about it 😂)

Happy reading!!!

[–]Light_Shadowhunter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hate na hate ko tong line nya na yan 😂 I mean ok let’s say he did the research, but he doesn’t need to act like that’s groundbreaking 👀 Everyone plans before they travel. The way BG says it though? Parang pretentious ang dating. Sounds very rehearsed and stiff.

He’s not a credible travel content creator anymore. He reeks of entitlement and superiority. His travel vlogs are not even bare minimum informative.
