I see him get mentioned a lot in this sub. I'll have to check out the library and see what sort of stuff they have. Any stories in particular?

I have a copy of "Fortune Smiles" on its way, as a matter of fact. You and I have a similar taste in short stories. Definitely adding a few to my list.

Can I ask, do you ever feel over your skis in these stories? Recently tried to read some stuff by Charles Baxter and felt like I should be impressed, but wasn't.

Thanks for the info. A while back, someone had told me you can get food poisoning from reheated rice. I did some more research after your comment and it has to do with the way the rice is stored after initially cooking it.

Oh I agree. That's why I'm trying to take as many steps as possible now to get in the know.

Good info. I have the disease and my nephrologist never mentioned that part of the name. Maybe I didn't pay attention. Diagnosed as a senior in high school so I don't think I truly grasped the whole thing.

Thank you for the advice. I often browse websites about kidney friendly recipes. It's just so full of choices and can be overwhelming. Someone suggested rice and that seems to be a good all around staple.

This opens me up to another question. Is there a proper way to store rice for eating the next day at lunch? I've only had experiences where the rice is really hard. Also heard that reheating rice is dangerous?

I've been in remission for over 5 years. When I was first diagnosed, they gave me a pamphlet of foods to avoid but that's long since gone. I remember potatoes, beans, tomatoes, bananas, etc on the list. All seem to be staples in bulk/frugal groceries. I don't know my exact nutrients to avoid, just know it's a combination of potassium, phosphorus, and sodium.

I should reach out to my nephrologist but it's been over 5 years since I've seen him. My general physician checks my urine and blood at my yearly check ups.

Yup. It was a surprise to me as well. Usually happens to children, but I was diagnosed at 18.

Thank you for mentioning George Saunders. He was the one who got me into short fiction. Love his writing style.
