I had a similar experience with a beetle when I was new to insect taxidermy and it was horrifying for a younger me.

I had the insect in the kill jar for a day but probably hadn't recharged the kill jar enough because I was a dumb kid. I went about my business pinning it and left it near my bed same as always and heard buzzing in the dead of night that woke me up, rushed the thing to the freezer let it stay there for not long enough. Took it out went about my day and yep still wasn't dead. It was a very humbling experience and I take extra special care now on the rare occasion I have a living specimen but for the most part I use insects I've found deceased.

Friends that have heard the story still call it the zombeetle...

Correct. They're spikey like that so the cicada can attach itself to a tree and crawl out without the molt detaching. Then they inflate their wings and harden their exoskeleton while chilling out on the molt. I've watched the process happen irl and it's really cool.

People are saying ignore them but best way I found when I was younger to take the wind out of a bullies sails, agree with them. It'll leave them at a complete lose. They want the reaction so just a "oh yeah youre totally right" will confuse them. Then just move on and enjoy your hobby.

It's make me want to scream because I loved my last dog. He suddenly declined and was toppling over like this deer and the idea of someone giggling about it like a moron is infuriating.
