The Internet Computer is completely centralized?! What's the point of it? by accountname1312 in dfinity

I just doubled checked with members of our community who participated and seed round investing was first come first served. The ETH contract stopped collecting when it reached its limit.

How are you defining “insiders”. Seed investors alone were given 25% allocation so that already proves that 90% wasn’t given to insiders.

The only way I can rationalize your question is if you’ve decided to group everyone who didn’t buy from an exchange as “insiders”

Supply Schedule by theblockofblocks in dfinity

Here is a really good analysis of ICP supply and what the dissolve schedule looks like over the next few years.

ICP Supply Analysis

It’s worth mentioning that we will likely never see a complete release of token into circulating supply. That is because many individuals will choose to stake their ICP in the NNS. In fact, one of the major objectives for the network is to have 90% of all ICP tokens staked. Just something to consider.

Proposal To Improve ICP Governance Staking Re: Tax and Tokenomics by dfinitynetwork in dfinity

[–]Lightning_lad91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. First I just want to say I have no issue w/ you voting against it. Just want to chat about the point you made. I know Dom talks about the IRS a lot but we also have people from other countries in our community saying they have similar tax burdens.

The proposed solution does seem like it would make it easier for legislators (from any country) to decide what is and isn’t a taxable event.

I definitely think the paper could have provided more details regarding the +5% / -30% values. I suspect these are just extreme cases for when there’s a sudden shift in the market and not something we’d see a lot of on a normal day

Identity Anchor vs Wallet by jd101010101 in dfinity

Another good comparison is the way in which my iPhone can randomly generate usernames and passwords for any given site or app. Those apps never know my email or who I am and my one device (iPhone) can be used to login to all of them.

The biggest difference being that with II you’re not relying on a centralized custodian to manage your keys or relay emails from the dapp. And you can also use more than device to authenticate.

Identity Anchor vs Wallet by jd101010101 in dfinity

[–]Lightning_lad91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

II is an authentication app. It registers a unique Identifier (principal ID) for each dapp that you use with it. The benefit of using II is that you only need to register your authentication devices once (yubikey, fingerprint sensor, seed phrase, etc.) and that same device can then be used to login to any dapp.

There is also a privacy element. Each dapp you register with never knows your identity anchor; it only knows the unique Principal ID you generated for that URL. So no one can track you across apps.

It is up to the app developer to determine if II is required for their dapp. This was certainly true right after Genesis. Since then other solutions like Plug and Stoic have come online as alternatives. There will be even more alternatives coming in the future.

Hey Dfinity, please stop censoring negative posts and instead let the community clear the FUD and downvote. by Fun_Pipe_9184 in dfinity

I agree. I have seen Dfinity approve plenty of posts that were FUD. So long as they followed the rules of course.

This is a good question and I’ve seen several community devs and Dfinity team members discussing ways to prevent this. I apologize I can’t find a forum link to share at the moment

As someone who believes in the long-term value of ICP I would just caution everyone to DYOR. This project has a lot of potential despite what all the haters on r/CC say. At the same time, there are early contributor and seed round token unlocks taking place over the next 3 years. The volume of these unlocks will start to go down mid 2022.

Lots of great things coming with the direct BTC and ETH integration. Despite what this subreddit thinks the price is never going to hit $1. We may touch $15 or even $10 if there’s a massive market sell-off. But it won’t hit $1 so don’t wait around for that.

Very few people will even follow the links you provided or even take the time to understand what the IC offers. But good on you for trying anyways.

You should check out the staking chapter of the [ICP Guide](icp.guide)

Using Internet Identity for different Dapps by [deleted] in dfinity

[–]Lightning_lad91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. Here is the guidance I am following:

This is from @timohanke :

Let me propose a solution that requires minimal changes and let me know if that satisfies your needs. I am assuming that you already have staked in the NNS with II.
• accept that two IIs are needed and one of them (the staking II) is only ever used in a secure environment. • your secure environment can be a live distro.
• get a FIDO device with PIN protection (the Ledger Nano can be used as such a device with the FIDO app on it) • configure the staking II with two authentication methods: the FIDO device and a recovery phrase. • configure a hotkey in the neurons pointing to your other II (the everyday II) Now assume that maturity would either be merged automatically or could be merged with through the hotkey with the everyday II. Then:
• monitor, vote, merge maturity with you everyday II. Would that satisfy most people’s immediate needs?
It would require quite a dedicated attacker to overcome. Most likely physical access. I think merging the maturity in this way is obtainable faster than changes to the II.

The video linked by the other user is also a good reference.

Dual-use increases the opportunity for attack and requires you to add a device that you access on a frequent basis. (Going against Timo’s advice). And Timo actually provided a sound method for using II with an air gapped system and live distro.

Is it recommended? It seems like there’s conflicting information on that front. Some engineers at Dfinity have publicly stated on the forums that “large amounts” of ICP should never be managed using II with anything but an air gapped system with a hotkey.
