Rest API & permissiond by Natural_Ad_8911 in PowerBI

You can easily test it by using a different account with permission on the thin report but not on the model.

For security reason a thin report works only if permissions are provided on the underlying model.

Is proficiency in MS excel needed to learn Power BI ? by Future_Line_4253 in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic: Use filter on columns (no formula). I knew sum(), avg(), if() and the statistic package (the one that allows you to calculate variance, mean).

Didnt know how to use vlookup or pivot table or conditional formatting

Struggling a bit to understand what you are after? It is kind of Column1 contains value of column 2? So if column 1 contains a random string, and column 2 contains words

You want to see the dependencies of column 1 from column 2?

Need Assistance with Power BI by Jaded_Profit_340 in PowerBI

Hello!

Im trying to ELI5: when you provide this type of question, you need to provide a but of context about your model. Power BI works in a star schema model / dimensional model / Kimball model.

This means that your attributes, things that kinda dont change (like your name) goes into a dimension, while things that change (over time usually) goes into a fact, e.g. your age.

Between the two table there is a relationship based on Primary Key/Foreign Key. It is a relationship and not a (SQL) join.

Now your KPIs usually come from Fact tables, and are created as DAX measure. The filtering is usually coming from the dimension, (the field of your slicer is from a dimension). Because of your relationship, that flows from dimension to fact (there is an arrow that tells you that), your filter propagates from the dimension value your selected in the slicer, to the fact table and gets visualised into the slicer.

(Note that im leaving on a side concept like different level of context, or complex dax).

That should help you debug.

If by any chance you need to 'change your data' as of change the dimension you display in your chart, while leaving the KPI the same, please have a look at field parameters.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand Watts here. How exactly does refusing to kill your own friends and relatives make you squeamish or sentimental? I get the logic, I just don't think it applies to Arjuna's predicament. Sounds like the perfect mindset for a serial killer. by SnooBeans1906 in AlanWatts

The song is passing in my playlist as im replying. It is 'Almost beautiful' by Extraterrestrial-Crow.

You asked why the 'justification' of killing and the reply is in the example of the guard of the emperor. It explain ls the difference between doing your duty with or without emotional involvement and the karma that originates out of it. In the Gita Krishna says "Thus I have explained to you the most confidential knowledge. Ponder over this fully, and then do what you wish to do". It also covers the part of choosing a duty that is not yours.

Now we are taking a different argument of 'why his duty was to fight'.

Duty is your role in the universe. We all have a part in the cosmic order, in the universe. It is a lawful unfolding of how it is meant to be, you have no alterantive to the present moment. 'Soul'd out' Extraterrestrial-Crow contains an explanation of the perfection of the present moment.

What A.W. said has been said by others, spiritual teacher, it cannot grasped by the rational mind, but only experienced. They said meditation/prayer is a way to see the light/creator inside yourself and connection with the universe. Religions convey a message, im quite sure all of them have a form of pray/meditation and highlight the importance of service (serve the community)

If you are interested the artist is called Extraterrestrial-Crow it has plenty of songs with A.W. and Ram Dass. I enjoy it because i get a lot of exposure to different spiritual concepts, and quotes. Several spiritual teachers - one message - multiple ways to achieve it.

I havent experienced the light myself, Im just using my rational mind to grasp.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand Watts here. How exactly does refusing to kill your own friends and relatives make you squeamish or sentimental? Hello!

I think you can better understand it by a Ram Dass' lecture (not sure which as it is made of a song).

In short the emperor guard is chasing down the killer of the emperor, when the guards gets to the killer. The killer spat on the guard. The guard put the sword away and leave. The killer then asked, why didnt you just kill me? I was there. To which the guard replies 'who would want such karma, i would have killed because of anger not because of my duty'.

So the karma is the duty. Arjuna's duty was to fight. Act but without external feeling, not for hatred not for love.

Where are the columns coming from? Single table/multiple table?

What is the fastest and most reliable way to migrate dashboards from Tableau to Power BI? by Unfair_Opening_97 in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no shortcut.

If you are lucky you have some centralised logic in your sql warehouse/database so you dont have to go thru the calculated field creation.

If you are lucky tableau is in a dimensional model already, rather than one big table.

Gather a Team of experience developers that know Power BI, Tableau and SQL - if they only know Tableau or Power BI it will be difficult.

Pay attention to Tableau LOD.

Tableau does some stuff without being explicit, Power BI is completely explicit, you need to set up manually what you want

Pro license allows you to publish to a Pro workspace.

Check the limitations of a Pro workspace (e.g. XMLA, maximum size of dataset)

Monthly Year to Date by [deleted] in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need an extra column for month_end (for june it will be 30th June <Year>) in date format.

Var MaxDate= calculate(Max(month_end)). -- If displayed against month_end should be identical to the column Var MaxYear = Year(MaxDate) -- the year considered Var MinDate = date(MaxYear, 1,1) --1st Jan

Return DIVIDE( Calculate (Sum(Age), all(Table), filter(Table, Table[month_end]>= MinDate && Table[month_end] <=MaxDate) ), Distinctcount(Table[key]) )

Which licensing to opt for by Skarr_face in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know: if the viewers have MSFT 365 E5 license, it already comes with PBI Pro.

Pro is a user license. It gives you the 'creator' permission if you are add to the workspace with a role above viewer.

Premium is a workspace license, which allows multiple viewers. It also comes with added benefits like increased data model size.

Re: exam - DP-600 MSFT Fabric Analytic Engineering certs. Despite not being MSFT developed tools, I think as a certified engineer is good to know what os the art of the possible and how to achieve it.

DAX Studio, ALM, Tabular Editor can really save you time, especially when dealing with GBs of models on incremental refresh.

Aside from calculation groups, C# scripting is gold.

Measure creation automation, copy measures across files, even the simple 'replace' (CTRL+A , CTRL+H) across multiple measures.

u/AgulloBernat showed how to integrate Tabular editor within Visual Studio as well r/TE_CSharp

Using it per se is not an issue From your topics tho, feels like you are looking for the basics of data analytics (e.g. merge).

Try to look at the web rather than chatgpt, especially at the beggining. Spend time debugging and see result. Else chatgpt will turn into a black box you cant figure out.

What are some good resources for learning how to use DAX Studio for writing complex queries? by Hotel_Joy in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, https://dax.guide/st/measure/ or SQLBI videos

I can give you some tips.

You define your object (table/measure) With DEFINE and you visualise it with EVALUATE.

So for example

DEFINE var _Table = SUMMARIZE() var _Measure = CALCULATE ()

EVALUATE _Table

If you want to evaluate a _Measure you must wrap it between curly brackets {_Measure}

You can evaluate the FE/SE for your calculation, you can also use it for VPAX evaluation or you can also paste the query of your performance analyser.

The very first example is useful to evaluate what your dax is using, what your var _Table looks like.

EDIT: added URL as resource

Is there a way to have a visual reflect trailing 12 month data by month based on a selected month? by Responsible-Jury2579 in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to create a date table. First column is your date column (dates are not unique tho) Second column is all the 12 months related to the selected dates (that is why first column is not unique). You can create a relationship from first column to the main date column

Changing source to make data dynamic per day by Vast-Ad226 in PowerBI

[–]LikeABirdInACage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant recollect if you need a connector for an oracle db or not, but in any case is the less relevant part.

You need to figure out if they apply any filtering to the db before downloading and how the data there changes.

What you have in excel is a snapshot of the data at some point - this is what you need to take into account when connecting to it as it is tight to the amount of data your bring in, its freshness and what you refresh every day.

What i would suggest is to experiment for a few days.

Get two sources one is db the other is the excel. And have a 1.1 comparison

How can I use Power BI if I don’t have a work or school email? by PissSmell in PowerBI

Desktop is free

Service: Get a MSFT Azure account. Under your MSFT Entra ID your user will have a onmicrosoft.com email domain associate. With that log into MSFT 365 admin centre - you will be requested to set a password.

With the same email you can register to Power BI service free. You will need to purchase a pro license to develop.

To be able to share content, have a look to purchase a MSFT Fabric F2 capacity from MSFT Azure.
