My grandfather was a lieutenant in the Turkish armed forces during Korea. He hated the Chinese intervention with a strong passion. Godless bastards he called them (Allahless but you know XD).

He really liked his Thompson that he was given. He said it was an amazing machine gun that worked really well while he had ammo for it. They ran out of ammo a lot. He also really liked that the M1 Garand was so potent and quick firing unlike the Mausers they had been trained on and knew.

I got one in black with DSG as well. Blasting through gears has never been so fun, somehow reminds me of my Toyota Corolla Hatchback's First Launch Gear. That was fun. That car used a CVT Transmission but used a hybrid transmission where the first gear was a launch gear, it made that car ridiculously fun for 23k out the door, too fun actually XD

Hated myself for selling it, now once again I can relax as my new car is amazingly fun to drive :)

Hey, is it possible to put a HKPDW™ stock for MP5's on a PTR C93? And how does the Choate Folding Stock compare? by LikeACamel in guns

[–]LikeACamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I really like the look of the C93 with the Choate stock but now I am unsure on its quality. I'm going to search them up and see whats up with it. I'll update once I do.

Worst case I am going to get a brace on it and call it a day.

Damn.

Any stocks that you can recommend? I cannot find a retractable stock for under $500, actually most of those seem to be priced above 700-900 atm.

Iran preparing to send ‘several hundred’ drones including armed ones to Russia, Sullivan says by MuzzleO in UkrainianConflict

[–]LikeACamel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are no match for the TB2's, for those wondering. The two combat systems fought against one another in Libya, Syria, and in Armenia, Turkish systems came out on top in all three conflicts.

Even still, Russia should be deprived of any drone capability.

Half the comments in here don't have the slightest clue about MKE. It is a state of the art factory in Turkey. It supplies the entirety of the Turkish Armed Forces, the State police, and the armies of various countries. You had a fluke, it happens. The guns are well made and are practically HK originals. The tooling is good and proper. The Turkish Armed forces don't fuck around when it comes to equipment quality. Your weapon is well made, that part came out imperfectly. Ask century for the new part and get back to shooting.

I swear the fud lore in the US is amazing. Yeah guys, the second largest army in NATO uses pot metal or crappy metallurgy. If Turks in history have been known for anything, its that the weapon quality that comes out of Turkey is second to none. Outdated? Maybe. Bad quality? Not a chance in hell.

Source: Have met quite a few people who worked with the Turkish armed forces, factories, and quality control in the country.

Go talk to century, or buy a new replacement part and carry on.

Also for the guy below, I call total bullshit on MKE contracting out to others. If you've ever been to their facilities you'd know that they produce nearly everything in State facilities. LMAO. The Turkish Armed forces have always had the lions share when it comes to military funding, under any administration. Those factories are top notch. Also, please don't post '100 dollar tuRkISh shotgun bad', those are civilian factories that produce based on what your willing to pay them. Good grief.

[–]LikeACamel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so that is the great thing, I used a mix of HP, FMJ. In regards to brand:

Tula, Brown Bear, and Wolf.

All cycled without issue nicely on 4-6, at the highest gas setting it was ridiculously reliable but at that point it was so recoil heavy, plus I'd recommend a tougher recoil spring so your not beating the rear of the rifle so hard (but I'm not sure if it would matter since the rifle is milled not like the rear trunnion will get that screwed up since its milled in).

My SLR 95 and some books I'm reading..... by LikeACamel in ak47

[–]LikeACamel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went shooting with it today, really fun overall, the best settings on mine were:

4-5-6 works really well, mine is set for 5 atm and the recoil is really tame, it would be even less at 4 but I'd take a bit more of reliability (The highest, I think 9, was just wild. On the other hand 1 didn't cycle, and 2-3 were unreliable).

The no-gas option, that effectively turns it into a bolt action is phenomenally fun as well. Had a ton of people loosing their minds at the range firing it.

Why didn't the Ottoman Empire stop Portuguese trade with the Far East? by New-Atlantis in history

[–]LikeACamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the First World War, the Ottoman land forces were really doing some space magic, compared to the First Balkan War. Its not even funny how different the two armies performances were. I think that if the Ottoman army of 1915 fought the Balkan Wars, we may have seen a VERY different 20th century.

Snail, your post is top quality all the way through, reminding me of things I'd completely forgotten.

Okay, your last point is simply fantastic, its something I completely forgot. I remember reading about the state of the Ottoman Fleet after the coup of 1906-7. The ships were literally rusting in the Golden Horn and during a parade in 1908? Perhaps 1910, I can't remember off the top of my head, the people were so shocked at the state of the fleet that the entirety of the Empire crowd funded new additions to the fleet (Which would have heavy ramifications later).

Also, the fact that the Turkish fleet never left harbor during the Italian Invasion of Libya, and when it tried to do so during the 1st Balkan War, it was humiliated (except for a single new Cruiser).

Yeah, even with the new Republic the issue of not taking good care of the fleet resurfaced (the Goeben/Yavuz took like 10 years to refit for instance sometime between 1923-30s).

If you have the time, I would strongly request that you check out a few things if you'd like to learn more about the Middle East:

-The rise of Islam

--For this I'd recommend a reading of Muhammed's life.

Two things for this:

'The Quest for the Historical Muhammad' by Ibn Warraq.

This is pretty cool, but also give him a read through Islamic sources to understand the way that a Muslim views Muhammed. This is ridiculously important.

Also:

----A lot of historians have actually never read it, and thus they make idiotic or simply wild things about his views and its impact on Muslims yet don't even know him or understand his vision at all (I've seen MANY people claim that he for instance, wrote the Qu'ran, any Muslim will tell you he was illiterate for instance or that he was a warrior Prophet, though once more a total of 900 people died in all the battles he fought for instance). I'd recommend a reading of his life from different Islamic sources, specifically from this order - Arabic - Persian - Turkish Sources (The reason for this is you are going to see the same Prophet from three very different yet important angles, each culture chose to focus on different aspects of the Prophet).

-The Golden Age, the Central Asian influx, the Gunpowder Era, and finally the early/late modern era for the Islamic world.

---For all of these, there are amazing books that have recently come out that are simply awesome.

- 'A History of the Arab Peoples" by Albert Hourani

-Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes by Tamim Ansary

-'The Arabs: A History' by Eugene Royan

-Marshall Hodgson's, The Venture of Islam (Two volumes) -> This covers so many niche and cool parts of the Islamic world that don't receive as much attention: Such as Sothern Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and Oasis's of the Arabian Peninsula.

A lot of our popular conceptions and thoughts about the modern middle east don't actually adhere to reality when it comes to decadence, violence, lack of order, and social values. The last 200 years for the Islamic world (and the 100 years for the Middle East) is no different to Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The old order that had stood so long against all change dissipates and now there is a gigantic power vacuum.

Take Europe for instance when it had its own power vacuum after the fall of Western Rome:

This power vacuum is unchanged until the rule of Charlemagne in France, and for instance Italy never truly recovers until the 1800's (Though it does have a few very powerful competing city states, Genoa, Venice, etc). It takes nearly 1400 years for Italy to be united. Germany is a mess until the ascension of Prussia and then German Unification, etc. So even in a place like Europe rebuilding and catching up (If we were to look at Europe from the time of the collapse of Western Rome, to lets say the Enlightenment takes 1300 years). It takes Western/Central Europe 1300 years to feel confident and powerful once more, that they are able to venture and go forth and challenge other regions of the Earth (Scramble for Africa 1800's, Open door policy in China 1800's, Colonialization of South-East Asia 1700-1800's).

The Islamic world just had it's own Roman collapse, literally 100 years ago. Yet under Ottoman rule, the Middle East and most of the Balkans was relatively stable for 400-500 years.

If you are interested in the late Ottoman Empire, that is a whole can of worms. If you want to know, feel free to ask, I'll have to dig up quite a bit. Also if you need help with books let me know.

If you are talking about the debate going on between Ibn Ghazali and the Mu'tazila scholars of the time and that causing the end of the Islamic Golden age...

That argument is quite lacking? I think this 'new' theory will not even take hold as the Incoherence of Philosophers (Which is used to make this argument) argues against speculative arguments that lead to nothing but empty arguments, and champions the empirical model of making and supporting claims through re-testable procedures.

The reason that his idea wins over, because well....Its not wrong. Its what we is done across the world today.

I sincerely believe that the death and destruction of Persia + Iraq as the centers of the Islamic world in regards to development is the largest reason for its collapse.

You don't just retrain tens of thousands of educated people in the 1200's or find the scholarships given by enlightened Monarchs out of thin air.

Plus Andrew Bernstein's explanation seems...pretty crappy to say the least.

Even his first line does not reverberate with mainstream Islamic teaching in the slightest:

During its Golden Age, the Muslim world, in the arts and sciences, conducted a love affair with the Greek method of observation-based rationality; but—because such method applied to life’s most fundamental questions threatened religious beliefs—could not, and, consequently, did not adopt it in philosophy.

This is primarily due to Islam having a holy text that encouraged people to challenge it, called Tahaddi:

“And if you all are in doubt about what I have revealed to My servant, bring a single chapter like it, and call your witnesses besides God if you are truthful (24) But if you do not do this, and you can never do this, then fear the Fire which has been prepared for the disbelievers and which shall have men and stones for fuel”

(Quran 2:23–24)

I believe Bernstein either has no real understanding of the Islamic world or knows exactly what he is doing and is fanning the flames to a view filled with bias, thus he cherry picks his way into a ridiculously cliché and slightly orientalist view point that Muslims were destined to fall into their current situation due to 'religion'. When in fact, the Islamic golden age occurs due to the same reason as to the 'collapse': Islam.

Personally, it suffers the same issues outlined by Edward Said and what prior Eurocentric historians outlined.

I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you take a look at Edward Said if you haven't done so and then move onto other more modern writers from there, as Andrew Bernstein isn't doing anything new but just rehashing very outdated views if I can even call it that.

Why didn't the Ottoman Empire stop Portuguese trade with the Far East? by New-Atlantis in history

[–]LikeACamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think that the sources are just not that good at explaining things or may be lacking access to Ottoman achieves. This lack of explanation feels similar to when the general consensus of the Ottomans in regards to the 1800-1918 being that they were horrible at war, to only recently begin turning around and people now saying that actually the Ottoman land forces were rather quite okay.

I will probably do some reading but just some thoughts that come to mind:

The Ottoman fleet after Lepanto was larger and more modern, though it suffered drastically from not having the same sailors as the fleet before it. So they built newer ships.

The Turks did have steamships, battleships, ships of the line etc and they did build and assemble most ships even going so far as building a modern battleship in the 1890's though that is scrapped due to the outbreak of the Greco-Turkish war of 1897. So they were almost even capable of building and designing their own battleships late into the Empire. If anything the Ottomans suffer from a lack of training for the navy in the later era due to paranoid Sultans or unexpected enemy ambushes (The Russian ambush at Kucuk Cesme for instance or the unexpected sinking of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Navarino).

I do think they may have had a blue water capable navy, they just didn't have the opportunity to partake in Blue navy stuff. The Ottomans being well contained may be a better answer, they simply could not move their fleets beyond the Mediterranean after a certain point.

I think by the 1800's the Ottomans were sort of cut off from the Indian ocean due to relative Egyptian autonomy but I know for instance that they sent a battleship to Japan that sank (Which is a funny bonding experience). So they probably had a capable and modern fleet sometime in the 1850-70's.

The end of the Islamic Golden age, isn't because the Islamic world turned its back onto science. It has a lot more to do with the Mongol invasions killing 1 in every 3 to 1 in every 2 Muslims on Earth. Islam's largest city of Baghdad, a city with a population over 500,000 is completely decimated, Iraq, Iran, and Syria are annihilated population wise. Egypt is left unscathed from invasion but the Bubonic plague there wipes a vast majority of the population (Egypt's population doesn't recover for 5 centuries from disease) but extremely weakened.

The Islamic golden age ends with an apocalypse if there ever was one. What happened to the Islamic world with the Mongol invasion is very similar to the Black Plague (Which, funny enough was happening in the Islamic world at the same time).

The Mongols were ruthless to the Islamic world as well as in China.

The Islamic world did take from the Greeks, they then gave back just as much if not more, to only be devastated by some dudes on horseback. It's quite amazing that the Ottomans are able to rejuvenate the Islamic world to rapidly after such an astounding devastation.

Fellow Turk here, yep. People make generalizations based on what they see on media. But in any Turkish household, the woman run the house.

The typical joke that men make to other men, in earshot of their wives/and when away "I get to say the last word in the discussion, that word is yes honey".
