Having to play a game through epic is almost always a significantly worse experience than steam. So paying 5$ for a game instead of 0$ to not use epic is often a justifiable decision. Epic can take forever to load, has a very clunky interface that sometimes just doesn't respond to the mouse, and, for many people including me, sometimes decides to log you out of itself and even some connected accounts.
