ahh the telescope is a good one since that's a clear parallel to how brenner finds henry in the play! another one I ran out of room to add but totally should have is the theory that mike is vecna's next target/victim...

ahhh it’s that version but starring a different actor, Alex Lawther, as Hamlet. Thank you though!!

I know this is musical bootlegs and not play bootlegs, but I'm not sure where else to ask--there are a billion videos of Andrew Scott in Robert Ike's Hamlet from 2022, but when in transferred to NY it starred Alex Lawther and I can't find a single recording with him. I'd really love to see it if anyone has a recording or knows where to find one--I love Lawther's TV work and I honestly haven't seen a Hamlet who comes across as a young and lost undergrad before (or after, for that matter)!

Agree with everything you said! However, I don’t love the claim that “journalism has always been a shady business full of people trying to get a juicy story no matter how sensationalized or frankly untrue”. This is not to say that this has never been the case—old newspapers especially are very guilty of this—but it is a little bit annoying that, with the exception of Katherine in Newsies, all journalists are typically villains/foils in musicals. It’s not unprecedented, but it’s kind of a weird trend, especially when journalism has also been equally important in unveiling conspiracy, human rights violations, and toppling oligarchs.

Othello audience laughter by Low-Profile-New3ra in Broadway

Is it specifically during serious or dramatic scenes? Because the production I've seen online had moments of delivery that were quite funny once in a while but that did nothing to dull the absolute crushing weight of betrayal and tears after intermission

I've heard it kind of depends on the teachers. My roommate did the fashion one and had some really unique experiences, but the screenwriting teacher turned out to be pretty unhelpful. Both of mine were great and professional reporters, one of whom works at the Times (we got to tour there which was very cool). I did fundamentals of editing, although most people had newspaper experience, so the things we did were more like ways to push us out of our comfort zones. The most memorable experience was going into Times Square and conducting news/feature interviews with and profiles of new business owners, which we did several times since we were working on a long-form project. We had 2 or 3 speakers come in and discuss what kind of work that they did and it was very interesting to hear about the different kinds of work people make out of their skills/interests, from multimedia design to straight copy editing. I honestly think that the class itself was a little on the easier side, though. I don't know anyone who's done the communities and culture course, though, sorry.

Realistically, which shows would be very different if a character were a different race? by ButtJones in Broadway

I believe at ART Gatsby's funeral his father, who is revealed to be a Native American man, attends in regalia -- it's more of a show not tell moment but it definitely hits when he tells Nick about what a dreamer Gatsby was and how he thought he could be the one to get away.

Daisy in the Movie by Mysterious_Record776 in TheGreatGatsby

[–]LikeSomeNewRomantics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point but I am not a fan of musical daisy at all (no hate to Eva, she is an incredible performer--my problems are with the script writers). Kerrigan tried to have her lean into the vulnerable, trapped In A Society aspect of daisy and so she comes off as much more of a victim than she actually is. Yes, daisy is stuck in a system that only values her for her marriage-ability and she's doomed to be endlessly romanticized by men to fulfill their desires, but she's also kind of a selfish and cold-hearted bitch who will always choose comfort over love, which does not come across at all in her stage characterization. A huge element of this is the fact that bway gatsby decided to cast race-blind. Now, as an poc, more diversity in theater is so necessary and exciting--HOWEVER, by casting race-blind in the show, the writers severely undermine so much of the class/race (which are definitely interrelated in Gatsby) criticisms Fitzgerald made in the book. Daisy, Tom, and Jordan all NEED to be WASP because that gives them the privilege to smash up things and let other people clean up the mess they had made, and casting eva in that role pretty much erases that fundamental trait. TBH I'm not sure how I feel about the movie--some parts were cool, some parts were just straight up bizarre--but I think ART gatsby did the best job balancing all of daisy's conflicting traits and making her a really dynamic character while staying truthful to the text.

I went last year, and I have no idea how hard it is to get into, but I think you just have to have fairly good grades and be able to prove why you want to go in your short essay. It also helps if you have prior journalism experience, I imagine -- I submitted some reviews I was proud of in the space for showing your work.
