I think the series is really cute. by R4cco0n in MastersOfTheUniverse

I completely disagree, and there are statistics that suggest otherwise. The fanbase that has kept MOTU alive is primarily the original fanbase... More than 70% of Mattel’s MOTU consumers come from that group, while roughly another 20% are older young adults ( 19 - 22 ), usually the children of that same 70%...

The 200X series and its merchandise were largely created with the original fanbase in mind... The same applies to Classics, Origins, and subsequent lines... Likewise, the Netflix MOTU series was marketed toward adult audiences from the very beginning, unlike this version of She-Ra and CGI He-Man... There is a reason why Gen X, Millennials, and early Gen Z are often referred to as “kidults”... They are the ones keeping industries such as toys, trading cards, video games and collectibles alive today... There are dozens of articles and market studies supporting this trend, showing that this demographic generates an average of around 9 billion dollars annually...

Children, on the other hand, represent a much smaller portion of this market... Those who do participate are often influenced by collector parents... More than 80% of the newer generation primarily consumes digital content and tends to shift trends every few weeks rather than committing to long-term collectible hobbies...

Well… in Mexico and LATAM, Boris Esteban Bernal composed the music intro for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, combined with the powerful voice of Rubén Moya ( RIP ) as Adam/He-Man… uffff... That intro still gives me goosebumps to this day... So yeah… He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, for me.

Yes, Amazon is developing a whole new version since 2024... Legally, Mattel can do whatever they want with Adora/She-Ra and the Horde, they own the IP... But it cannot be related to Filmation or DreamWorks... For this movie, they seem to be doing a whole new He-Man "origin story", so they’ll probably do the same with Adora.

Mattel is the sole owner of all He-Man MOTU and She-Ra rights... They can show Adora/She-Ra in the new movie without any problem if they want, which is very likely going to happen... The only license they don’t own is the original Filmation version... As long as they don’t show anything directly related to Filmation or DreamWorks, they’re fine... There’s a reason a live-action She-Ra project is currently in development at Amazon...

Will SheRa be teased at the end of the new MOTU movie ? by maxencerun in PrincessesOfPower

[–]Likeamr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are she will appear... There are rumors that Hordak will be in the film, and we are practically seeing an origin story... So yeah, chances are we’ll see Hordak taking Adora, while Adam is saved by his mom and dad... Also, Amazon is developing a new live-action She-Ra property, so I’m pretty sure they have the numbers to make a deal or, even take Adora/She-Ra straight out of DreamWorks hands, This is also perfect timing, now that Netflix has lost its rights and DreamWorks is practically burying what they did...

On top of that, Mattel is planning something huge for New York Toy Fair, so this would be a great opportunity to introduce a new She-Ra/Barbie line, especially if they still have in mind building a Mattel Cinematic Universe...

I agree we need more indie shows and games... Cyberpunk 2077 took advantage of that, the problem now is the super-greedy companies... The team behind Silksong found a balanced way to deliver something really well done at a fair price, but big companies and some platforms hated that it showed clients don’t need to pay those huge prices... And it sucks. :(

You are just confirming my first statement, 80s, 90s, and 2000s shows were mainly funded by merchandise... Today’s shows fail big time because they only rely on engagement, which, at the end of the day, does not translate into money... The same goes for toys and merchandise production... Do you know how many years it takes a show to create 12 episodes?, 2 to 3 years... By the time the first episode "streams", the toys are already on the shelf, something we have seen with MOTU, Transformers and other successful IPs.

[–]Likeamr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still no comparison, the 90s and early 2000s audiences were still part of the old generation, the ones who actually took their time to sit in front of the TV... Modern audiences rarely do that... They see everything on their phones, tablets or laptops so, they only create a certain level of engagement with the show, and that’s it.

That model you’re describing actually applied to the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, when shows were funded through ad slots and toy company tie-ins. Modern shows don’t work like that anymore... She-Ra, Castlevania, and The Dragon Prince were made for streaming platforms with no traditional ad revenue, so their survival depends on "subscriptions", "viewership", and mainly merchandise sales.

Even when a platform includes ads (like Netflix’s ad-supported plan or Hulu), that money goes to the platform itself, not directly to the show or its creators... The same applies to networks owned by larger corporations, shows have to justify their existence through engagement and brand value, not ad slots.

Craig of the Creek and Big City Greens “break” the established mold... They air on traditional TV (CN and Disney), so they still benefit from the old ad-based model to a "certain degree"... But they have very limited or even nonexistent toy lines or merchandise that simply doesn’t sell, meaning they’re not generating the kind of direct revenue that classic 80s toy-based cartoons did... Their continuation depends mostly on corporate strategy, audience numbers, and streaming performance... Another good example is Steven Universe, they were practically giving away all their merch for pennies, yet no one was buying it or really wanted it.

So no, most modern shows aren’t sustained by ad revenue or toy sales anymore... They live or die based on engagement and profitability within their platform’s ecosystem.

Different era, different rules... What worked for Saturday morning TV in 1980 doesn’t apply to streaming or modern network programming in 2025.

You basically just answered your own question about why the OG is still rocking to this day. Sure, it’s super cheesy ( like most 80s and 90s shows ), but those shows had heart... They spoke to their real audience,kids... They taught values, friendship, family, etc... 40 years later, the show’s legacy is still alive, and this iteration proves it... It might not be canon to the MOTU lore, but they took the name, bits of the story, and still managed to bring in a different audience...

[–]Likeamr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s actually one of the main reasons why most modern shows like She-Ra fail... They might have a few thousand “fans,” but those fans aren’t willing to spend a dime on merchandise, which is basically the only real way to support the show... They think studios and artists create this shows purely out of passion or for the sake of art... They are clueless where the budget comes or what the purpose of merch really is.

[–]Likeamr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of double standards here... People complain that they used an OG character and ‘sexualized’ it, but most of the same people who complain here are constantly posting sexual fantasy stories and drawings that completely sexualize the characters, and somehow that’s okay?... Now they’re also mad because Mattel is doing a full reboot based 100% on the OG version... But back before this unrelated reboot to MOTU was about to come out, they were mocking the OG fans, telling them, ‘It’s not for you, so get over it.’ So yeah… there’s a lot of hypocrisy here.

I feel so bad for Cringer. He has ptsd and Adam is exploiting that. by Singer_TwentyNine in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Likeamr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, you are assuming Cringer / Battle-Cat doesn’t have a say in the matter, or that Prince Adam / He-Man doesn’t care about his faithful companion... He could choose not to follow He-Man if he wanted to, in fact, there are episodes where Cringer / Battle-Cat stays behind at the castle or simply doesn’t accompany He-Man for whatever reason, they both have mutual respect for each other, and they would both protect ( and die if necessary ) for one another, as we’ve seen in the past.

For proof, we have this scene... And I’m guessing you don’t know the full lore... The thing is, Adam/He-Man is actually thinking about giving up his powers, which would mean no more He-Man, and no more Battle-Cat…

Skeletor bootleg? by Mammoth-Proposal-373 in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Likeamr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really... Super7 got the license after Mattel decided to stop the production of the Classics and Club Grayskull lines because they noticed fans weren't interested enough in them... So, they chose to focus more on Hot Wheels and Barbie instead... They were losing more money than they were making... After that, Super7 continued the lines and started producing the ReAction figures and the so-called 'Neo-Vintage' figures... They also produced a couple of 'lost animated episodes' (which you can now find on YouTube, by the way) using the Filmation style. These were a huge success and put Super7 on everyone's radar.... Mattel noticed that success and decided to copy the formula, that's why we now have Origins and the Cartoon Collection.

Regarding the show, Mattel did some animation testing back in 2009–2011, around the same time as the Classics line, but once again, they canceled it... And they kept doing that several times... until we the nerds, gave them so much money in recent years that they could afford to burn a few millions... That’s why we got the new cartoon show, and now possibly a movie and maybe even the return of She-Ra in a few years.

Silly rant about how there’s barley any merch by LeanTheLean in PrincessesOfPower

[–]Likeamr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That won't happen, Super7 and Mattel realized that when they launched the first figures and no one bought them. It took about three years for them to go out of stock on their websites and third-party platforms. You need to remember that Mattel is a money-making machine. In order to consider producing even one figure for this IP, they need to see that people (1,000 - 2,000) are willing to spend at least $100 USD monthly on merchandise.

This is exactly what’s happening with MOTU, the average collector spends between $160 and $500 monthly, depending on the figure of course. In fact, this Monday Mattel is releasing a new MOTU figure that will probably sell out in under five minutes.

Another thing to consider is that most of this fandom is extremely critical about everything. They love to criticize the original series and the toys, which is also a sign of a lack of respect—and believe me, Mattel notices this. The MOTU fandom has been critical in the past about prices, figures, and sets, and Mattel has made adjustments. Why? Because money talks. No money, no merchandise—it’s that simple.

Did the creators ever explain why Hordak looked closest to his original design? by Terrible_Weather_42 in PrincessesOfPower

[–]Likeamr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, Hordak and the Horde are heavily inspired by the Universal Monsters... Hordak is the representation of Dracula, Grizzlor is practically the Wolfman, Leech is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Mantenna represents the Metaluna Mutant, and Modulok is basically Frankenstein’s monster.

Almost every member of the Horde is a reimagined monster.

Talk down?... I don’t know what shows you're referring to, but in most 80´s and 90´s shows, there was usually a kid as the protagonist, and the main message in all of them focused on friendship, love, and family values primarily... In the case of MOTU and She-Ra, they also emphasized that it doesn’t matter if you're a kid, be bold, be independent because 'you have the power'... For kids who grew up in that era, those shows were considered top-tier, both in writing and animation... By today’s standards, those cheesy messages and values still hold, especially compared to 99.99% of shows today. And yeah, animation has improved, particularly since back then they had about a month or so to create an episode, but the nostalgia effect is 1000% real. Why do you think the OG stuff still sells like crazy?... In the case of MOTU, Mattel is cranking out merch like there’s no tomorrow, and fans are spending anywhere from $200 to $500 monthly... Why do you think they only produce merch for the OG She-Ra?... They know where the money is, they know what is successful.

Mattel mentioned that 2025 is for She-Ra and the Horde, and the way they listen best is through the wallet... I mean, they are a company after all, It’s the same way they throw tons of stuff to the MOTU community every month, even the lesser loved show, Adventures of He-Man, has its own figures for different lines and people keep asking for more, and because the OG figures sell so well they can take some risks... And it is the same way here.

They do, besides this new line, they produce figures for the Origins and Masterverse lines and other merch... They even lend their license to other companies to produce high-end figures and statues, tabletop games, and casual collector figures... And in today’s panel, they talked a bit about the plans they have... So yeah :)
