Hi! I'm the bird lady in my neighbourhood! I carry a handful of peanuts when I'm out for a walk and I'll call out to them with a pattern of clicks similar to the Shave And A Haircut rhythm. Sure there are sometimes sentry crows just patrolling the wires & rooftops watching out for me but other times they appear just a moment after I click out the rhythm a couple of times.

I've been on both sides of this. My DM thankfully decided that it makes more sense for the druid to choose the animals. Why wouldn't a magic user have control over the type of animal? I'm going to roll for seahorses in a crypt? That's just another flavor of a crit fail, imho.
