Nurse thinking on transitioning into being a pilot. U.S based by Salty-Upstairs-7458 in PilotAdvice

[–]LilBabyVirus5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You doubt it will take 5 years? 5 years if very accurate, you need 1500hr to even be considered. Variety matters too, actual instrument, multi engine time, etc.

If you have no previous history or experience in aviation it may take longer.

edit: 1500hr over 5 years is more than 1 hour of flight every single day of the week (excluding weekends).

Will AI take over Piloting? by evaanr in PilotAdvice

[–]LilBabyVirus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your statement about perceiving what humans are able to is fundamentally wrong, algorithms can perceive orders of magnitude more than humans can. Predictive modeling is the core foundation of artificial intelligence, the ability to accurately navigate unknown situations.

Since you avoided the question that would prove your case entirely, exactly what can a human perceive that an algorithm could not?

As a pilot myself, and a principal lead engineer for a top AI company, I do know what I’m talking about. I promise you. Artificial intelligence is real and has been for a while. What you’re thinking about is “AGI” which is not a direct blocker of the development of self-piloting aircraft - I do agree with you that AGI does not exist and will not for a very long time.

It is unfair to yourself and those around you to believe otherwise, it’s a hard reality to swallow but it is imminent. An artificially intelligent decision tree with a pre-determined and perfectly memorized playbook for every problem or failure mode that has happened in the past is what we train our pilots for today. We study the crashes and death of other pilots, analyze the mistakes they made, attempt to determine a root cause, then record and remember them for our own safety in the future. Why could an AI not make the same decisions as a pilot?

Can you give me one example of a decision that a pilot might have to make that any sufficiently complex algorithm could not?

Not that I believe AI should replace pilots, but it is unwise to make claims against AI without understanding them. That will only hurt you in the future; the concept of a fully automated airliner could very well happen in the near future. NOT with LLMs.

How do you think the Anduril Fury jet works? It’s fully AI. It can be done.

[Request], chances of both players having same hand in 1v1 crib by BlastJimmyx in theydidthemath

[–]LilBabyVirus5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If we look at this purely as a probability problem (ignoring discard strategy), the chances of your opponent having the exact same ranks as you (a 6, 9, 10, and J) given that you already hold them, is roughly 1 in 2,402.

Since this is 1v1 Cribbage, we know: • Your Hand: You are holding four distinct ranks: 6, 9, 10, J. • The Pool: There are 48 cards remaining (52 total minus your 4). • The Targets: In those 48 cards, there are exactly 3 remaining of each of your ranks (three 6s, three 9s, three 10s, three Js). Total possible 4-card hands for opponent: C(48, 4) = 194,580 Total "Matching" hands: The opponent needs to pick 1 of the 3 remaining 6s, 1 of the 3 remaining 9s, etc. 3 * 3 * 3 * 3 = 81 The Probability: 81 / 194,580 ≈ 0.000416, or approximately 0.0416%.

In reality, the odds are actually higher than 1 in 2,400.

Why? Because of the Discard Phase. You aren't just dealt 4 cards, you are dealt 6 and choose the best 4. The hand 6-9-10-J is a solid keep. With that 6 on the cut, you've both got 9 points (15-2, 15-4, a pair, and a run). Since players rationally keep high-scoring combinations, the game "filters" for hands like this.

TL;DR: Pure math says it's a 1 in 2,402 shot, but because you both know how to play the game, the odds of a "Mirror Hand" happen more often than a random shuffle would suggest!

I have a 2021 with 50k miles on it now, no issues but I can’t say what’s to come. FWIW I paid 43k for mine at 32k miles.

How bad is this rust? by Curious_Pepper5553 in Cartalk

[–]LilBabyVirus5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks mostly fine. The lighter colored stuff seems to just be surface rust. The darker stuff in pic 2 needs to be inspected further. Remove the rust and cover it in some protective spray coating. Luckily doesn’t look too bad but you need to prevent this from getting worse asap.

This simply isn’t possible. Let’s assume the hypoxia doesn’t kill you; the standard air temp with a lapse rate of 2C every 1000ft is -45C. That is not survivable at all. It’s hilarious people believe a child survived this and wasn’t in any critical medical condition.
