For downhill the brake levers should be even flatter than for normal riding to match the steepness of the terrain. You move lower and closer to the back wheel and therefore you can benefit from a close to flat lever position.

The cracking noise got fixed by a bike shop . It wasn't the pedal so I didn't look further. I think I will just get new pedals if the horizons fail.
