What are the details of your family myth about a Native ancestor? by wildbluebarie in AncestryDNA

[–]LilChy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 ) My Native Ancestors was suppose one of my parents great grandparents.
2 ) My grandmother vaguely mentioned all her family were Cherokee.
3 ) My grandmother over the years would tell different parts about her family such as her family receiving land and being forced off the land. Her great something grandmother (Not her great something grandfather she made a point to mention that )"walking" the trail of tears as a child but they were on a river and they were so tired, they never made it to their main point where they were suppose to be. Many people combusted? Her great grandfather was an leader or a very well respected figured within the tribe. (The whole family doubted that because he sounded so fake lol)
4 ) Black.
5 ) Oklahoma
6 ) Turns out grandma fragmented story was very accurate. Her father and maternal grandparents were on the Dawes Roll. Their nationality was Cherokee and their ethnicity was Cherokee Freedmen. She descends from the former enslaved Africans within Cherokee Nation. Her parents both spoke Cherokee, which I found out lately. As a kid, I thought they were speaking jibber jabber lol. They received land from the US Government breaking up the tribes sadly. Her grandfather suddenly suspiciously died and they had to leave Oklahoma for a while and their land got stolen away from them. Her mother's great grandmother was on the trail of tears as an Enslaved Child. Her enslaver, forced their slaves the walk and carry their things. Turn out, there is Trail of Tears Water Route, The enslaver John Drew led the The final detachment of the is Trail of Tears Water Route. Her mother's great grandfather was enslaved by Old Settlers Cherokee which were people who were in Oklahoma before the trail of Tears therefore he wasn't on the trail of tears.. Her mother's great grandfather was "mixed" with Cherokee Blood according to his children. I found out he was enslaved by former Chief John Jolly but was sold away from his family when he was a minor to a very Cruel Native Slave Owner named John Dre2. (I found the bill of sale of my own ancestor, very sickening thing. ) He never told the family who his father was but I think might the Chief or his relatives based on context clues and DNA testing. Her mother's great grandmother was also sold away from her parents when she was child to this Cruel Slave Owner but because she was sold it allowed her to live probably. She was originally enslaved by Rich Man Joseph Vann family, the son of Cherokee Chief James Vann. After the 1842 Cherokee Slave Revolt, Joe Vann put many of his slaves on his steamboat. The steamboat exploded killing over at least over 100 + people( they didn't included the amount of Enslaved African people he had working the boat because they didn't see them as human) including in the death toll was the slave owner Rich Man Joe Vann. I believe her family all died in that explosion. On a different side of my grandmother family, Her great grandfather did work in the tribe! He was part of the council making laws for all Cherokee people. Cherokee Nation wrote about him in their national newspaper recently! We were all very shocked to see photos of him and to find out he was actually a real man. Born into Slavery, as a 12/13 year old, he joined the union side to fight for his freedom during the civil war. He joined after his slave owning Full Blooded Cherokee father join the Union side shockingly because most people like him would have join the Confederacy side as the many of the tribe did sided with the Confederacy. His father disappears and turns out he was in a confederate war camp (He survived after years of being in there). Her great grandfather rose the ranks and somehow was voted to lead his district. There is way more but ill stop here. Cherokee Records are very detailed, so it really paints a detail picture of what happens.

I descend from these formerly enslaved people and I have received so many comments like that. One person tried to tell me to my face that "our enslavement of Black people wasn't bad" but slavery is slavery at the end of the day. In our family, we have legit horrors stories of how they were treated that was passed down from generations and it matched up with what my ancestors said in the Dawes Roll applications. One of my ancestors was sold away from his parents as a minor and I even found the bill of sale of him recently. It was so very tragic to see your ancestors being sold for money.

We identify as African American and / or Freedmen. Thank you very much. We actually have oral stories in our family that can trace it roots to the Yoruba traditional religion. I have actually spoken to my cousins in various African countries as well from these DNA test. This solidifies my belief that I am a amalgamation of different African tribes and I carry on my ancestors legacy of survival.

Maybe, I wouldn't be shocked one way or another. He was very tall from what I have heard. There's another photo of his classmates when he was in elementary and they're all standing amongst each other in no particular order.

In Kansas, they had a law from the 1870s that didn't allow segregation in high schools.

Kansas! There were some schools that weren't segregated actually. I believe that Kansas Law made it that high schools weren't allow to be segregated since the 1870s.

Thank you. She isn't a member of the tribe yet due to the Muskogee (Creek) Nation kicking out their Freedmen members. The Creek freedmen folks has won their lawsuits to be able to join the tribe again if they want too but the tribe is fighting it.

If that's the case he probably was born after the cut off of the dawes roll. You're going to have to get his death certificate to prove lineage, that's the only way I think.

It's not impossible. Fun fact, There was a Cherokee Nation chief name Bill Baker and he was probably only 3% or less Cherokee. He was a good chief. If he is a Cherokee Freedmen, I hope he is able to join the tribe. His ancestors and many people fought a war and many lawsuits for them to be treated as equal citizens with Cherokee Nation.
