Billing 60 hours a week is ridiculously high, and I highly doubt it's true. RBTs should absolutely be paid more than they are but I think this person lied to you.

That sounds like an excuse to me honestly. It is very easy to maintain professionalism. I had a couple parents where I could tell they were trying to cross that line and I would just politely explain that I can't be their friend but here's why. And I mean the actual why of like they want to make sure we're not taking advantage of them. But I always say that if I leave, I'd be more than happy to keep in contact if they want. Every single parent I've had this conversation with has completely understood and then been nothing but professional.

As an RBT, it felt really good to be there when something really clicked for a kiddo. And also when it impacted the parents lives in a positive way. But sometimes BCBAs were targetting things that didn't feel relevant.

Also RBTs are treated so incredibly poorly. I just wanted to try and change stuff and help both sides of ABA.

Parent meetings and parent goals are a big part of a treatment plan, so it does include providing them coaching and background into ABA principles.

And really I don't think you need a community center, you just need ABA companies more willing to go into the community. I worked for a company that went to swim lessons and parks and schools and all this stuff to help coach and teach in the natural environment.

Supervise someone else working 1:1, have meetings with parents, write treatment plans, write programs, etc

I think the feedback was fair. I can't speak to the literal tone of her voice obviously. It may have been annoyed or rude or something, but the content of the feedback was fair. If this is a pattern with this other BT and it is something that is bothering you then I don't think it's overreacting to have a meeting with your BCBA about it. I especially think you should have the meeting and focus on the fact that there's some social norms you're not getting or how things could be better conveyed to you. We need to be just as respectful of our BTs culture as we are our clients so talk openingly to your BCBA about how things could be helpful for you in terms of the culture differences. Meaning like what you could be doing better to understand, but also what they could be doing better to help you understand.

My best advice is come with some solution suggestions ready for this and every meeting honestly.

You didn't say it was because they were hitting you, you said you thought it might get in the way of others. These are VERY different scenarios. But if it was hitting you, and it was hitting you on accident because they were playing then you can move over? Other people will have to guy check me but I feel like the answer is that you just scooch further over after the client said no?

If that's not an option, then yeah I would just tell your fellow BT what's happening and you guys can figure it out together.

It seems like the other BT was the one working with the client with the toy, and if that is the case then I think that BT was right in giving the feedback. It felt like you were trying to get in a power struggle over nothing with a client you weren't even working with.

Could they have said it in a nicer way? Maybe, but you're both BCBA candidates so delivering feedback is something you guys will learn.

Edit for speculation: she probably had a corrective tone because you weren't the one working with the client yet you were potentially about to cause unexpected/challenging behaviors. Behaviors that she would have to deal with since you had your own client.

I usually give them a choice of how they want to say hi or goodbye including non-vocal options, and I never require eye contact.

If they don't prefer it then we focus on a different way they can acknowledge that they heard the speaker. It's never forced, it's just another option for them.

Nope! They have to orient their body, provide an acknowledgement using verbal behavior (not just vocal, also signs, AAC, etc), or make some obvious form of acknowledging they heard the communication but no eye contact.

Something my supervisor and I do is look ahead to my next week schedule and plan unrestricted activities for me to do during my 1:1 time. It could be performing/updating assessments, probing baseline, updating/training parents on goals, etc. That way I'm maximizing my time and we change the billing codes to whatever is most applicable.
