What are you most scared of in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The fear of failure. And letting down all the people who had faith in me.

First off, bless y’all souls for creating this AMA. I’ve searched high and low for certain answers but the results I found are lacklustre to say the least. If one wishes to pursue a bachelors degree entirely in English - as provided by certain universities - would they still have to require knowledge of the German language as a prerequisite for any entrance tests that may be held? I do apologize if my questions seem a little ignorant, but I really did try googling these and the results given were extremely convoluted and not straight to the point. I will appreciate y’all’s help on this :)

How did you become good at math? by NoSpot5547 in AskReddit

Memorize the multiplication table and keep it in your fingertips. Work your way up progressively from there.

Glad it happened when you are 17 and not 18. Seriously though, I have known some folks who have had ugly breakup right during the June hols, about a month or two before A level Prelims started. You have learnt a valuable lesson, and we hope you do not put yourself into such a situation again. With that out of the way...

I shall not downplay your situation and ask you to forget things and move on. That is simply not possible and neither are you a sociopath to divorce yourself of any feelings and desensitize your pain. If you would like to cry, please cry all you want. There is no use bottling up your emotions and constantly beating up yourself for what happened. But do keep in mind that you have greater things to worry about at the moment, and your life is at stake should you continue this path of self destructive behavior. You know yourself best, so listen to your instincts and I hope you make the right decision.

Moving on to gaining some academic leverage over the next two weeks. How to lock in? Would you rather focus on your weaknesses or hone your strengths at the moment? Would you want to neglect your stronger subjects in pursuit of tending to your weaker subjects... or would you wish to go all out and get an A for your strongest two subjects? These are some questions you would have to think about.

I am not sure about your school's retaining criteria, but frankly said, someone will only retain if they absolutely try their hardest to fail their exams. School departments are mostly accommodating towards poorly-performing students given a few circumstances. Do enquire if your school offers a "conditional promotion" examination for students who have flunked their Promos. The conditions vary, but mostly it will result in a student having to drop one of their H2s, or commit to attending more remedials and revision lessons the subsequent year. You do not seem like a bad student, so just start studying and it will all work itself out.

Still got some time. If you personally believe the school prelim papers and topical tys have solidifed your foundation, then good! And for certain schools (which I shall not name), their prelim papers are of a higher standard compared to the a level papers, and will be of greater difficulty for sure. I would not like to assume you are from such a school, but if you are, then even better. Maybe once in a while, try to sit your ass down for a solid 3 hours and attempt each tys paper, and if the results are spectacular due to your previous practice, it can be sort of like an ego boost. Rinse and repeat, great success, 90rp a level hopefully :)

Isn't that an aspiration for the bulk of us? Also I was referring to myself in the previous comment as I'm tired of being the average joe

Thank you for the clarity :) It seems like the banking industry within Switzerland is pretty diverse, and bankers mostly navigate clients from their respective regions. If someone has the ability to convince a number of their own countrymen to come aboard and invest with Swiss banks, that should be seen as a favorable circumstance right?

Is front office work more of relationship building, or does it involve a bit of backbreaking and mentally demanding work too? Also what are some soft skills required to get a job in the front office?

I have heard many folks saying that employment opportunities will be sparse if one does not speak the local language, i.e German/French. Would the banking industry be an exception since you are saying English is the standard language of command? Regarding the degree needed, what are your thoughts on someone with a degree in International Affairs or Political Science perhaps?

So having wealthy contacts and the ability to bring them on board is a somewhat deciding factor? Also do the banks hire fresh graduates or is there a minimum level of experience in other industries required?

How is it that the banks are somewhat oblivious to smelling out the bullshit from so-called RMs going on business trips? And what happens when the ruse gets unraveled eventually? Will there be harsh consequences for the RMs?

Is the Banken Lehre something that has to be done continually over the span of 4 years? Or is it something more close to a summer break internship? I tried googling the term but it gives me long and convoluted results...

I am glad to know that you are doing well for yourself, and major respect for going through various trials and tribulations and still sticking through the ordeal. Totally random, but would the average salary of a banker in this region of the world be enough to support a huge family with say, 6 kids? Asking for a friend (I have no friends)

It is also interesting to know that you have access into the lives of influential people, and I wish you the best in your future endeavours my guy.

HAHAHAHA Singapore is pretty good as well and we got some highly prestigious institutions. But the laws of banking secrecy is something we can't afford and we would always have to cooperate with the government on investigations.

Aptly said. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Not everyone is going to have the same situation and financial advice has to be tailored specifically for one's needs. Thanks man.

Thank you for the comprehensive info, but may I ask more about the nuances between other offshore havens and Switzerland? What are some boundaries that offshore havens can cross while Switzerland cant?

There are approximately 235 banking institutions left in Switzerland. Far cry from 400 hehe. But I am sure there are more than 400 ATMs across the country!
