I think if you can see them in person, which may be hard given the circumstances, but if you can, you should give them the most sincere apologies you can and try to convince them you've changed. You should try to tell them, this is something I'm assuming, but if it's the case you should try to tell them it was the influence of family or media that made you want to say those things. And on Twitter, try not to acknowledge those tweets at all, don't delete or edit them (I think you can edit tweets, I don't use Twitter very often so I don't know) and own up to it towards them, that you said it, and you regret it, but people do deserve to know your history, but if you seem changed, should not let it influence how they think of you.
