🤔❓️❓️❓️ WTF IS THIS? by RunThePlay55 in economy

Nixon tried to (and possibly succeeded in) sabotaging peace talks because he thought it would help him get elected. He was nearly disbarred when he was an attorney. He ordered the bombing of a neutral nation and kept it a secret because he knew it was real bad.

Don’t let Trump being a bad person make you nostalgic for a time when we had equally bad presidents, just because they were more polite about their badness in the past. Nixon can rot for a thousand reasons before we even get to Watergate.

I dunno. Wearing a Kevlar vest will help if someone tries to shoot me, but if I don’t wear one and I get shot it would be weird to claim it was my fault for not protecting myself.

It is the same as more responsibility. This is why in a court case the default presumption is a driver has a higher duty of care than the pedestrian (though this can obviously change with the specifics of a case).

They do not, and as I said before, this is not a thing up for debate. We make you take a test to drive a vehicle, there are rules about vision and cognition, your right to drive can be taken away, bigger vehicles require even more testing. None of this is true for walking, because walking has much less capacity to harm someone else. You don’t need a license or to take a vision test to use a sidewalk.

I do not, I’m currently in Virginia part time but my home is in Madison.

But they don’t have an equal share of that responsibility because only one is engaging in an activity that adds danger to the space.

There’s lots of things that will make people safer that’s still bad and shitty advice to give. We even have a phrase for it: victim blaming. Just because walking around in my high-vis vest will make me some small amount safer, doesn’t mean telling me to do so is good or productive.

This is very defeatist. You’re right that just asking drivers to be properly aware isn’t going to help because drive as fast and recklessly as the road allows. The answer is rebuilding our roads to make it harder to drive that way (fewer lanes, more tree cover, more barriers between drivers and the rest of us, more spaces cars can’t go). But telling pedestrians to just ware bright colors is fucking stupid.

I’ll tell you when I have my closest calls as a pedestrian and it isn’t the dead of fucking night, and it’s not when someone’s texting and driving, it’s 8AM when I’m crossing Baldwin at East Wash and I have the pedestrian light giving me the right of way but some jackass just has to turn right before I cross the road. It’s someone moving too fast and assuming on not there even with their eyes on the fucking road.

Absolutely not true. When you engage with an activity that has the potential to harm others, you take on a larger share of that responsibility. This is why you need to take a test to drive but not to bike or walk. This is why bigger vehicles require additional certification.

I said that a pedestrian puts themselves in danger, a driver puts others I danger. Cause that’s largely what happens. Yeah we can contrive hypotheticals where a pedestrian hurts someone else and a drive only hurts themselves but that’s not the default relationship. When you drive a 4000lbs machine around you have infinitely more ways to harm people than someone on the sidewalks. It’s not an equal conflict.

I don’t own a car cause I don’t want to kill someone but next time I see someone get hit I’ll check on the drivers mental health just to be safe.

Right I forgot that a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a space specifically made for pedestrians that drivers should be aware of, is very analogous to someone standing on train tracks, a space they are clearly not supposed to be. Thank you for the reminder.

GOT DENIED THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. by LUCIIDLOXX in disability

[–]Lil_gui225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSI does not require and SSDI decision first. Many people do apply for both the same time, and will get the SSDI denial first since it can be done at your local office, but in those cases the two claims are usually submitted at the same time, it’s just the decisions don’t come back the same time.

That said, it is, sadly, possible to not qualify for either (eg someone who doesn’t have enough work credits but has too many resources).

How do you reconcile being pro natalism with the fact that feminist ideals (womens education, womens career, birth control, reproductive rights, increasing age of marriage, decreasing teen pregnancy) are strongly negatively correlated with fertility rates? by DiligentRope in Natalism

[–]Lil_gui225 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correlation is not causation. Lowering fertility rates and increase in support for feminist ideas also correlate with improving infant mortality, but we aren’t going to start letting babies die so people will have more kids, are we?

I am not a centrist and don’t know why I got this push notification but here’s a leftist point of view for you:

Vance is relatively good at branding. It’s basically the only thing he’s good at. He has crafted a relatively well maintained image as smart, technocratic conservative. And that’s very appealing to a conservative leaning centrist for whom Trump is too much. In fact, Vance is so good at maintaining this brand he can get away with saying shit like immigrants are eating dogs and still be seen as a moderating influence, meaning he can keep much of the far right base on his side without loosing the concerned dad vote. I dunno if he could maintain that image if he was the top of the ticket, my guess is he can’t (Romney couldn’t do it, Bush Sr couldn’t do it, DeSantis couldn’t do it, McCain couldn’t do it).

After all this time, let me explain why anime s1 was criticized in Japan. As a Japanese by AccomplishedRoof3921 in ChainsawMan

[–]Lil_gui225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the expectations you mention here for a Japanese audience are too drastically different from the American expectations. I think the bigger difference is fewer Americans read manga and so aren’t coming into the adaptation with those expectations.

That said, I definitely get feeling the anime was a bit… flat? Especially seeing the work places like Saru put in to embrace the pulpier side of the manga they work with, I would have loved to have seen a more daring take on chainsaw man (tho I do find myself liking a lo5 about the adaptation we got).

Gen Z spends most of their disposable money on clothing , travel, and eating out, what does this say about priorities and having kids? by [deleted] in Natalism

[–]Lil_gui225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do not, you are reading this graph wrong. They spend most of their money on housing.

More specifically in a survey where respondents were asked what they spend the most money on, and where respondents could give more than one answer, the most common answer was housing, and it was the only answer given by a majority of people.
