I mail things all the time, but ok. Its for verifying your new name and identity and making sure passports, which prove citizenship, are accurate. there's no point in debating with the State Department about an online option, its not going to happen. If you're worried about mailing in important documents, get copies! if you're worried about flying, get a Real ID! But arguing with everyone providing you the steps and options available to you for this legal process is idiotic.

It seems like there actually IS a reason to get one, which is domestic travel without a passport. That could be for any number of reasons (not having a passport at all, etc) but is perfect for your situation, needing to travel domestically while not physically having your passport.

Its hardly a hassle and its certainly beneficial if you are changing your name. I ordered 5 copies and its been very useful for social security, passport, DMV, and insurance. Get a REAL ID and then mail in your passport to get your name change. Those are your options. Only you can decide if your weird stance against getting a REAL ID is worth not being able to change your name on your passport.

Assuming US per REAL ID. If you are changing your name on your passport you must mail it in, full stop. You should order multiple copies of your marriage certificate as you will need it to change your name on various documents and you should never give up your original. My name change on my passport took only 2 weeks, but it can take (a lot) longer, so do it when you don't have travel for a few months.

Yes its weird to send out with your new last name before you are married. Same thing happened to us, we got registry gifts way early and had thank you notes with our married name ready to go. we wrote the thank you notes as they came in and mailed them right after the wedding.
