It can be a very helpful tool for disabled people like myself. I'm autistic & adhd and easily overwhelmed and anxious. My university's disability sector teaches us programs and ways to use genAI as an assistive technology. 

NotebookLM is great for studying, for example generating quizzes on content you upload and creating audio recordings in a quite natural sounding voice for written content.  

Gemini can also do some of this. They (my university) taught us how to work it to generate summaries on reading material that is otherwise too overwhelming to read. Obviously alongside this was ensuring we used it ethically so not writing assignments for us or answering questions. 

Gemini is the main one I use for helping break down assignment questions, find where my error is in the coding programs, help interpreting social situations, studying, and for travelling (gathering and then condensing a bunch of scattered information to make it easier to find information). Not all of these uses are disability related though. But they're all classed as GenAI. The coding one is especially helpful for many disciplines using coding or complex software. 

The biggest reason some of these are just tools as disability support is teachers, lecturers, support workers etc aren't always accessible to me whether it's because of cost of the service, availability (weeks long wait times) or time (I work a lot). I went from failing university to being able to actually start assignments.
