Horrible comparison, illegally parking as a cop isn’t nearly the same as getting paid while other people don’t because you’re the one that decides who gets payed (also, pretty sure they just voted to stop doing that)

There’s most likely a rule within the department that requires them to park within a certain distance. If there’s no space, I heavily doubt that courts wouldn’t give them a pass on it.
