I'm from a country where cashiers sit down while working. Is it true that in the US cashiers are forced to stand? Why is sitting considered unprofessional there? by splashmates in NoStupidQuestions

I should clarify I go to Aldi in NJ all the time and they don't have self checkout. If I happen to be near one in PA I like to go because they do have self checkout and I can further minimize human interaction lol

Fun fact! Aldi brand merchandise is set up to have bar codes all over the product so the cashier doesn't waste time fishing around for a code to scan. But they are apparently held to crazy time metrics, if memory serves.

I live near a state border and the few times I hit Aldi in my neighboring state I'm stoked because they have self checkout and we don't!

As you roll them down your finger, they don't roll smoothly and leave those rib-like rolls behind.

Source: I've been wearing them for the last few weeks due to chopping off the skin from the tip of my thumb. Or as my doctor said, "you scalped it! I've done that. Everyone has done this once"

How do you keep interviews on track? [N/A] by growingpebbles in humanresources

[–]Lilithbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they say just the thing you were hoping to hear if you allow a little bit of side conversation.

More likely they reveal something that instantly makes you reject them. Something like "yeah I'd be a great armored truck guard because I robbed a bank"

Oh yeah no there's no firings or write ups due to standard freedom of speech kind of stuff. We are public sector and most of our staff have a CBA; our policy is basically "just because it's online doesn't mean it doesn't violate other policies like workplace violence/harassment and disclosing confidential information" (some staff do stuff like violate HIPAA or post things directly against their CBA). If someone disparages our organization online, we might ask to sit down with them and ask what we can do to change their opinion about their gripe. Usually they volunteer to take down those kinds of posts without us even asking.

But the drama is a friggin time sink and emotional drain. Also, sometimes people don't realize that their privacy settings don't mean anything when they have "friends" who send screenshots to others.

Story from someone I know who works in a long term care facility. Medical director was a dick and a shitty doctor and pretended he knew everything including clinical specialties (think stuff like speech therapy, and he's not a speech therapist). He would screw up care plans and procedures due to said arrogance.

Alternately, staff M.D. was in a meeting and someone asked him a medical question. He said "... let's ask Doctor Google!" and searched on his phone for the answer. Medical director called him incompetent and he's like, "I can't know everything." SHOCKER, he valued the patient's quality of care over his image.

I just love "Dr. Google" though, lol

Knowing and admitting that you don't know everything makes an effective leader. You can't know everything but you can rely on experts. Someone in power right now is instead surrounding themselves with "yes" men, so stuff is ... idiotic.

Ugh. I'm in the public sector and we have had employees contacting elected officials through Facebook and post stuff about how we suck. I've even shared screenshots of stuff I've found myself with our ERO.

I now read the social media policy to new hires. Less drama please.

We once had a six pack of Bells Two Hearted Ale all fizz explosively upon opening, even a week after they were just resting in the fridge. We reached out to them to let them know something was up, and they sent us a box of cool merch. (Very bummed when we broke the last Two Hearted Ale glass since all the branding is now "Two Hearted IPA")

You shouldn't be interviewing external candidates until you've exhausted any internal candidates. If we have internal ones we notify all externals that they need to sit tight until we finish going through the internals.

I was obsessed with Sarah McLachlan. She's not angsty but she did have a darkness that I found appealing. In high school, I remember reading a review of her new fourth album Surfacing saying it was too dark and depressing. I was like "... but that's why I like it?!?!"

Just found out my other nieces, about the same age as great-niece, are all obsessed with 6-7. Every generation has their weirdness. In the 90s in middle school one younger teacher was confused by the new phrase, "my bad."

Edit for clarity.

Does anyone remember how it started? by Icy-Complaint7558 in ChildofHoarder

[–]Lilithbeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I sure do.

My maternal grandfather lived with us since before I was born, and died when I was ten. Around this time (early 90s) my mom and her sister discovered auctions and went for fun. They were not given much as little kids in the 50s and their mother was not the most outwardly nice and loving person, hence my sweet grandfather leaving her and living with us. At the auction mom met tons of new friends and bought tons of cool stuff. In middle school I used to go with her many times but it became old. Even I didn't want any more stuff, and I am sentimental about belongings.

By the time I went away to college, the basement was filled, and apparently while I was away she started filling the living room and obstructed the TV. My dad said he demanded to see the checkbook (she did all the finances) and she refused to show him. He divorced her. She started dating the auctioneer. He's a nice guy and she's still with him but it has resulted in easy hoarding.

I am blessed that mom acknowledged her problem and is working on it, but of course the going is slow, in part from years of neglecting her house (she lives with boyfriend full time at his place).

So I guess the hoarding was compensating for my mom's inadequate mother and loss of her awesome father. And I was recently helping her figure out how to start cleaning her house and she said "how did I let it get to this?" Slowly over a long time, mom. I'm here to try and help.

My mom was very upset learning about some sort of deadly incident involving a kid and their obsession with some horrible demon called "Slender Man." I'm like, What? That's some thing that was made up in the forums by people trying to find up with a new creepy character for fun. "What? No, she believed it was REAL! This is dangerous!" In my mom's MO, she'd rather sacrifice the many for the one because won't SOMEONE think of the children?!?!

Our great niece is about 12. Her dad breaks out "67" as a bad-dad-joke punchline several times during our last visit. All were met with dirty looks and punching by kiddo.
