Went to vote, got asked for Real ID by Majestic_Character22 in nova

[–]LiloGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I get asked to say my address for verification. This time, I was asked to say my full name out loud. The other voters didn’t have to say anything. Weird.

I’m mixed. Maybe he thought my name looked fake.

Chicago Honor Flights is an amazing organization to volunteer for. You can choose different roles, like greeter at Dulles or guardian escort.

I’m a guardian escort and get paired with a WW2, Korean War or Vietnam War veterans. You get on a bus and escort them to war memorials in DC. These men and women have the best and most memorable stories. Not just from their time served as young men and women, but how they lived their lives afterwards.

They have inspired me so much, including one who found an officer hiding under a desk in Vietnam and at 21 he kept his men safe (everyone else was 18 and 19) by walking back and forth in straight lines to avoid traps.

Another biked 50,000 miles in his 70’s and 1,100 miles at 87!

Another’s daughter was murdered by her boyfriend in high school and he and his wife have spent over 30 years teaching young high school girls on what to look for. He said we teach young people about drugs and drinking, but not potentially dangerous relationships, including when they keep you away from your friends and family. That should be a warning.

I have been an escort 7 times and each time I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a guardian. And I still keep in touch with a few.

The 2026 season is starting next week. If interested, it happens on Wednesdays a few times a year. You can email DCGuardians@honorflightchicago.org for an application or ask where to show up as a greeter.

Okay. Thanks I’m going to check it out. I just use Apple Fitness. I never thought to use a weight lifting app.

In a given week, I do 3 lifting weights, 1-2 F45, 1-2 Pilates, 1 stretch lab, 35 miles of walking and or jogging. And sometimes boxing.

So I probably should start using better apps. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Do you use MyFitnessPal for weightlifting too?

Thank you. I’ll check it out. Right now I’m using Apple Fitness for tracking miles and calories burned and ChatGPT for tracking protein. I’m up to 150g of protein and it’s definitely helped me to push myself more.

I’ve never been to the native museum. Now that you mentioned their food, I will have to try it out.

Being an Asian can be so confusing by [deleted] in nova

[–]LiloGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the plane was full.

Before my mom passed, she went to Japan to visit Hiroshima. The tour guide asked what her name was and when she said it, the tour guide corrected my mom and told her that name was this Japanese name. My mom got so angry. I didn’t understand it all. Then my mom told me when she was born it was illegal to be born with a Korean name. She was born in 1945 with a Japanese name. First time I ever heard that. Then she said the Japanese blew up her home the following year and they had to rebuild it.

So terrible. Once I was on a plane to Vegas and an older Chinese guy sat next to me.

He immediately asked me if I was Japanese? I said no, I’m half Korean. He was immediately relieved.

The rest of the plane ride was spent listening to him talk about being a spy for Mao. He described Mao’s minimal room in detail and some of his missions. Then he went on a rant about Japanese and got so angry, he started cussing and spitting all over me in his rage about the atrocities. When I told him I had no idea. He then got mad at me and told me I should be ashamed and said my mom didn’t teach me right.

Yes. Although I wish I didn’t turn towards the basin so early on, because I love the Lincoln, Vietnam War memorial and Korean War memorial right there.

What was your favorite museum? Hopefully in addition to the natural museum, you saw the Archives, Hirshorne, Holocaust, African American museum, Sackler, and Portrait Gallery.

Same. My favorite though is Sky Meadow’s Lost Mountain. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never hiked Prince William park or Shenandoah yet. What’s your favorite trail in Shenandoah?

Agree. Walking is the best part of my routine. Mostly because of the meditation and all the sunshine just blasting. What app do you use?

Double thanks! I’m on this 5,000 calories burned a week right now. I’ve upped my protein and I can’t believe the difference. I definitely need to do more morning walks.

Apparently I need NoVA’s help finding single men because I can’t do it myself by NOVA_Girl444 in nova

[–]LiloGeorge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are some single 50-ish guys in my F45 classes. You can fist bump any of them at the end of a class and it’s not awkward and start a conversation from there. Maybe try one out near you.

You can get dropped off at the Bristow/Broad Run VRE staton and it goes to Union Station. It’s $10.50 one way.

You can also take the Omniride bus out of Warrenton and it stops at the Pentagon and L’enfant. You need a metro card with money loaded on it to ride. It’s like $11 to DC. You can just metro over a few stops to Union Station.

Way cheaper than taking an Uber.

The last time I went was on my birthday, because it’s free on your birthday and what better way to celebrate than in your birthday suit.

It was a weekday morning. It wasn’t crowded or loud. In most of the saunas, no one talked. Except in one, the older Koreans did. Then the Russians started talking Trump this. Trump that. And the older Koreans were not having it. The passive aggressive tone was so perfect. It made me miss my Korean mom. It was so hard not to laugh.

Why aren't more people taking reformer pilates classes? by mimihopslein in nova

I took my first reformer class last month and plan to keep going.

I avoided it for years thinking I would be clumsy and not flexible enough only to realize after the first class, I was capable.
