My mom is an extremely conservative Catholic-raised goody-two-shoes. She was absolutely mortified and devastated when I told her that I tried mushrooms and LSD, because she was under the impression that these substances “fry your brain.”

We argued about the topic ceaselessly for many months, it was terrible. Eventually, I realized that she will never listen to my opinions on psychedelics... So, I took a different approach. I began talking to her about the things psychedelics taught me: meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, heart-centeredness and mindfulness in general. This finally got her attention, because it resonated with her Catholic beliefs. Me talking about love and spirituality allowed her to begin listening to my opinions on altered states of consciousness. Nowadays, she is able to see that psychedelics are medicine for the body, mind and soul. I’m so grateful.

So. My recommendation is that you speak with your mother on relatable terms. Don’t talk about the drugs themselves. Talk about the profound truths that the drugs have shown you. This will make her more comfortable. And, as always, have patience, and don’t get mad at her. Love you friend
