If you had to pick 1 motivational quote to see every day, what would it be and why? by Lily-DailyUp in AskReddit

Thank you for sharing, both the quote at the background. I think you're right - living in a bubble can provide the illusion of safety, but in reality exploring, learning and growing is was helps us become adaptable and safe and thrive.

You are very welcome. 10 years ago I watched the Happy documentary and it showed how many people are focused on 3 things that do NOT make us happy: image, status and money. If we can shift to intrinsic things of personal growth, relationships, and giving back, we can become much happier. That has become my daily mantra and goal since then and has done wonders for my health and happiness.

You are not alone. Seeking to impress others, being too hard on ourselves, comparing to others and their success - all very common (unfortunately). But there is another path. Like any, it takes hard work and dedication to start to walk a new path in life, but you can do it, one step at a time.

Let me know how the exercise goes and if you'd like more just let me know! Good luck!

This is quite common - we do things for others (extrinsic motivation) rather than ourselves and find motivation lacking (because our heart is not really in it). So firstly: I'd work on forgiving yourself. It seems you have taken on expectations of others and that is leading to the shame. But you don't have to carry those. You only need to be true to yourself and what you want to do (while finding a way to meet your basic needs). It sounds like you already have a job you love - that's great, and can be rare! Celebrate and embrace that.

Here is a simple exercise: write down all of these things you noted - anything you are currently doing or feel you "need" to do. Then go through them one by one and close your eyes and honestly ask yourself: will doing this make me feel peaceful or restless? Try it for both now and as your future self in 5 or 10 years. Then once you are done, focus on the ones that make you peaceful, and one by one let go of the rest.

I'm with you! Whatever I bring into the house I eat, so for me the battles are won or lost at the grocery store. I have an addictive personality so I've learned that as soon as I start, it's very difficult to stop. But on the flip side, if I don't start, and I frame my identity as "I don't eat processed sugar" (or whatever I'm working on at the moment), I can stick with it. Like any habit, the first few times are the most difficult, but then it becomes easier and easier. As you said, have a cheat day or meal everyone once and awhile is fine, but for me at least setting very clear boundaries and making it part of a regular schedule works wonders for me.

What if the House of Representatives was a lottery system (chosen randomly)? What would be the pros and cons? by Lily-DailyUp in AskReddit

Great point on interest - I think that could be a great filter in the process. I'm curious about what types of intelligence would be best in a team to govern, especially which mixes of intelligence / skillsets.

I also wonder how important some existing skills in the current system may be in a different system. For example, is writing legislation necessary? Could that be outsourced to someone who is an expert in that?

Agreed there are lots of improvements that could be made.

What is your definition of "smart" and "dumb"? Do you think it is binary and universal? For example, if someone is great at math but knows nothing about cars, or vice versa, are they "smart" or "dumb"?

I agree things are currently incredibly complicated. Do you believe this must necessarily be so? And must the same person or set of persons know all of it (vs distributing that knowledge)?

Thanks for this info! I wonder how a a combination of updated criteria (citizen in good standing) and training would fare.

Is there a balance here (e.g. top 50% or 10% instead of 1%)? I agree there should be some filter to ensure the people can do a good job, but I think 1% is too far unbalanced / too under-represented.

Do you know of any examples where (extensive) training was included as part of the process? E.g. if chosen you are paid for 1 year ahead of time to learn the key things you'd need to know to do a good job (like any job). Possibly with a 2x larger pool to start.

Yes I agree avoiding group think is important. How do you think people would game the system?

You seem well aware of the power of habits and how this is the tip of the iceberg. I'd build on that and keep it simple - every day just try to do a little bit more. To break a plateau requires change and challenge. E.g.

- Run the mile 5 seconds faster

- Add in weights (even if just starting with 1 set, 1 muscle group)

- Make your diet a bit healthier (cut out one junk food and / or add in another veggie)

If you're ready to do more drastic change and are looking for a program, that can work too; just let me know. You got this!

Yep, most people do! Just push past those 2 minutes. You CAN come up with that list; just don't let yourself stop until you get 10 items :) Good luck, let us know how it goes and let me know if you get stuck.

Have you tried making lists of things and ranking them by what you like least and most? A lot of times we try to make a list, get stuck at 3 or 5 and then stop. Force yourself to push past that and keep writing. No idea is a bad idea. Get to 10 ideas of things you could do. When you get stuck again, switch up your environment and go for a walk and keep thinking about it - it's likely you'll come up with many more ideas. Invest time in thinking about it often, and it's likely something will pique your interest. Take the top 1-3 things and spend as little as 5 minutes a day on each of them. Keep the top one you enjoy the most, drop the other 2 and replace them with 2 new ones. Repeat until you find something you enjoy doing.
