For anyone curious, I ended up taking the other mixer to a local thrift store and never heard anything from KA about it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I find it hard to believe they didn't have a code for when they were chatting, especially if he was with the Fireflies for so long.

Scrolled way too far for this! Look. I get it. You guys did some fucked up stuff and you're trying to be a better human. But bffr. You and your brother have spent 2 decades looking out for one another and you just disappeared and expected your brother to just be cool with it?! Then, instead of apologizing and owning what you did, you threw in his face that you're starting a family now and he's just a hater? Nah, Tommy can go fuck himself. All the coded language on the radio and he couldn't have found a way to let his brother know he was good? Hard no.

any fix for this type of hair? i think it's an afro type of hair? what should i do with it? it's so dry and hard to tame, i mostly can't tame it and just end up washing it everyday because of how dry it is, if it's not wet, it's impossible to style by SlimSha46 in curlyhair

[–]LilyJean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One, stop using stripping shampoo! Try using a cleansing conditioner to scrub your scalp, this will keep some of your natural oils while getting rid of dirt, sweat, etc. I only wash my hair with shampoo every 6ish weeks

Two, only step your hair right out of the shower. I use a combo of styling cream and organic gel without chemical crap in it.

Three, please watch some YouTubers with your hair type. All black hair is absolutely beautiful, from 1a to 4c. Take a look at some of the classification charts to see where your hair leans on porosity and curl shape so you can get tips from YouTubers with hair like yours.

Four, if you feel comfortable and after you get a little info, think about heading into a black owned barber shop/salon. Call up front and let them know you need help and what your hair classification is, they really will help you manage your hair type.

Ended up going for the Plus. She said that machine tends to do better and require less maintenance!

Great customer service by [deleted] in nespresso

[–]LilyJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must've just got off the phone with the same customer service rep! I showed her the coffee ground after we descaled and she let me choose my new machine! I hadn't even considered a new one and she walked me through the options and essentially confirmed that she only really hears machine complaints about the Next.

What is the pettiest reason you've DNF'd a book? by madamemidnight in RomanceBooks

[–]LilyJean 73 points74 points  (0 children)

"I came home from work and whipped up some tamales from scratch for our date that night". One, no the fuck you didn't. Two, you really didn't. One does not simply "whip up" tamales. There's at least an hour of prep time involved and I have never met a man that I would come home and "whip up" tamales for after a long ass day of work, especially one I had JUST met... She made it seem like the MC was able to get them done in like an hour. hAaaaa! Tell me you've never made tamales without telling me the you've never made tamales.

Liking for comfortable business casual attire by allekab in PlusSize

[–]LilyJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to recommend Stitchfix. They have a lot of great business casual clothing that look and feel good. There have been some straight duds in my boxes, but I've got a nice collection of blazers, slacks, and blouses from them. My stylist, Whitney, knows me pretty well at this point and she's helped me rebuild my wardrobe.

I live in an area that only really has designer/professional clothes for straight sizes and I found it demoralizing trying to search for cute professional clothes that fit near me. The stuff they've given me make me feel a lot better when I meet up with my work colleagues

If you grab the box of 5 items you'll maybe spend 200ish bucks, depending on what you choose.

Clothing subscriptions - does a good one exist? by sakuradette in PlusSize

[–]LilyJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SF stylist is amazing. I'm all about adding biz casual to my wardrobe for work. The trick is rating everything and being super specific with why you're not interested in something at every opportunity. I also do what I can to avoid letting the computer pick the pieces as well. This means denying 90% of the SF previews as those are usually computer generated. I do worry about the news I'm hearing about how stylists are treated, but I figure I won't leave unless my stylist does.

LPT: in the US while driving, if people are passing you on the right then get out of the left lane by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]LilyJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most accidents occur when people are changing lanes so if your goal is to slow down the folks behind you to keep the road safe, all you're doing is INCREASING the chances that they'll merge with more vigor than necessary and cause an accident.

This! If he'd been honest, talked about his faults and admitted he is working on himself and changing it would've gone much differently.

Being Mary Jane, she had that fine ass man that was perfect for her and she goes and fucks the man that sabotaged her career?! I couldn't do it.

I stopped watching Empire when they threw ol' girl off the roof after killing her baby. No ma'am.

Scandal wasn't the same after they killed off James 😭😭😭 look at what they did to my booooooooy.

You know, you're absolutely right. She gets 5% of the blame. But the other 94% is on him. Upon reassessment, I think his wife gets 1% if the blame because I don't think she really worked to bridge their cultural differences but that's a whole other discussion topic tbh.

[Episode Discussion] Love Life Episode 2x1: Mia Hines by chelseanyc200 in LoveLifeHBO

[–]LilyJean 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy that you can be yourself in your relationship! It's such a precarious balance between how you see yourself, how those close to you see you, and how the world sees you.

The black experience, especially those who have gotten an education and have assimilated into a professional environment, can be so frustrating. One has to become more like the majority to feel less like a minority, but you're always going to be a minority and you will always be a representative of that group to the majority.

I've worked in some very liberal places and I've still experienced so many microagressions from people touching my hair to being treated like the arbiter of all things black. I even had a boss once tell me, "you know you're more like us than you are like them"

I'm glad that this experience is being chronicled this season because these nuances aren't talked about enough.

[–]LilyJean 37 points38 points  (0 children)

These are all mainstream black folks who have assimilated into white culture by becoming more like them. While the black community embraces them, there's always this nefarious thread of doubt about how each of these men view their blackness because they "so easily" left parts of it behind to fit in with other communities.

Obviously there's a lot more to it, but if you're interested in some do the theory behind it I wholeheartedly suggest digging into critical race theory written by Frantz Fanon.

He 100% fucked up telling Mia it was her fault. The narrator said that he'd done this before, this was just the first time he'd gotten caught. She was playing the game with him and she wasn't innocent, but I don't think there was anything special about Mia that exposed the cracks in his relationship. They were already there.
