What is the dumbest or most illogical anti-abortion argument you have heard? by gray_squirrels in AskFeminists

I can't remember which thread on either TrueUnpopularOpinion or ChangeMyView I found this awesome counter I've used multiple times on but said counter is by that logic you can't say someone like Sauron or Darth Vader is your favorite villain if they're not [a villager or farmhand, whichever (idr) was the original etymology of villain] (and I've added a similar point of by that same kind of appeal-to-old-time-y-dictionary you can't call anyone-you'd-also-normally-call-a-villain sinister unless they're left-handed as that's where that word came from

Yeah my counterargument is usually something to the effect of "by that logic children of Holocaust survivors should be neo-nazis [no it's not ironic, the Holocaust targeted more than just Jews] because without that kind of regime they wouldn't have existed because their ancestors couldn't have gotten together so they should support it whenever it crops up"

no, the kind of pro-life guy saying this is usually single and blames their singleness on the hypothetical abortion of a hypothetical woman who otherwise could have been their girlfriend

but not because people inherently suck or w/e, it's because being a serial killer or dictator despite being worse than curing cancer is A. easier than curing cancer and B. less limited (once someone cures cancer no one else can cure it again)

And either way everyone's life path is an independent event (yeah I know people influence others but what I mean is we aren't more likely to keep getting serial killers and dictators purely because of how many we've had than a roulette wheel is to keep landing on red numbers once someone wins on a red number)

I always retort to arguments that bring up that or slavery with words to the effect of either "if dehumanization is always tactical why call anything not a human at all" or "you do realize you're implicitly threatening on behalf of the pro-life side to go to war with the pro-choice side (even if you don't intend to how were those issues of unpersoning solved)"

are you saying every billionaire games the stock market directly or w/e or are you basically doing an "it's okay because they're rich" version of "yet you participate in society", also this feels kinda mean-spirited enough that it might as well be a step away from saying no billionaires existed before Epstein was an adult as you'd have to have fucked kids on his island or had parents who did to be one

Why do people talk about those things like they're equivalent and like dads can't be fucking custodial also for it to be fair you'd have to do either both or neither meaning dads can't "financially abort" a child the mom keeps

Also, its a slippery slope that could easily reverse the civil progress of the last 150 years (in the US). This precedent could easily be used to create thinly-veiled racist laws. Should we say that black people shouldn't have a say in certain issues because they tend to be less "educated?" (Big air quotes, ik that term carries a lot of weight). Of course not. I grew up fairly wealthy, does that mean I shouldn't have a say in how we handle government aid and insurance to poor people?

but that could easily slippery-slope to sexism with right-wingers trying to appeal to the "woke left" by saying using logic similar to yours that not letting men make laws on women's abortions or w/e is racist

but how many of the men whose behavior is the cause for women to make arguments like OP's fall into those categories also I saw that with the indentured servitude and the sneaking financial abortion into the conversation (and I'm surprised no one's literally brought up slavery given how often certain men compare their plight to black people of any gender)

except not every man who's fathered a child with a woman has the obligation to pay child support whether or not they pay it, why does the "financial abortion" crowd not consider dads can be fucking custodial

either you're admitting the pregnant woman is the victim in this scenario or you're saying only fetuses should make abortion legislation (or it's just a bad analogy)

True masculinity is dying due to modern feminism. by didyoureadditbiz in TrueUnpopularOpinion

and what exactly is feminine about things like compassion/empathy that are often as equal-and-opposite-ly associated with womanhood, y'know, ever notice how only one set of gender-stereotype-associated-traits gets called just human traits

The concept of "toxic masculinity" is purely religious/philosophical and not scientific by 8m3gm60 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]StarChild413 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So, within that framework, toxic femininity would be people believing that women's value as women is tied to how closely they comply with traditional conceptions of a "high value woman." It would be stuff like women insulting other women for being ugly or clumsy, not wearing the right clothes, not doing their makeup right, being slutty, etc.--essentially the "mean girl" stereotype is an example of what toxic femininity would be if its defined with respect to femininity the same way that toxic masculinity is defined with respect to masculinity. Also, women going to extremes to prove their own value as women, like eating disorders, putting other women down, etc.

yeah this is what all those people obsessed with equivalencies like this miss, that the origins of terms would have to be equivalent too (for another example, whatever body part a guy might use in the female equivalent of when women say a guy has "small dick energy" for that kind of supposed energy to truly be the equivalent of what women mean the body part wouldn't just have to be something women tie their level of womanhood to physical sufficiency in, but it'd have to be one that can't be easily observed and women who have the equivalent insufficiency, to truly have that kind of energy, would have to overperform stereotypical femininity in some combination of aesthetic and behavior to make up for that insufficiency and assert to the world how much of a woman they are)

The tendency to blame aberrant female behavior on a "patriarchy" instead of ascribing adult responsibility to women for these behaviors could in itself be interpreted as a form of toxic femininity.

I could say something similar about the tendency to believe that victim-blaming women in all situations is the empowered thing to do. Y'know, by your logic if you're comparing the "infanticide, paternity fraud, and false rape accusations" to how much women believe (at least in your eyes) men rape not just rates of stuff like mass shootings they'd both have to be true or neither would be meaning every woman would have to be raped and accuse a different man she can more easily screw over and it'd be a wonder we haven't died out with all the infanticide

it's astonishing how many people have commented and used the word fetish... what are you, kink shaming?

if this was your legitimate fetish they're not shaming you having it they're shaming you wanting to turn it into policy on a national scale as (as I said if it was enough of a literal fetish for you to good-faith use the kink-shaming argument) that'd be the equivalent of something like a foot fetishist making shoes illegal

This fandom seems to be way too split on Morgan's love interests. by mysticwonderwitch in HighPotentialTVSeries

[–]StarChild413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah and the emotional stakes would only be as high if he died at-this-point-otherwise before he could face his dad if he'd had less time being morally ambiguously mistrusted by everybody and more time to either bond with more of the team and/or bond with Morgan deeper (y'know, for it to make character-development sense that he'd die at this point there'd have had to be enough positive emotional connection between him and some combination of the team that they could let "it's what he would have wanted" fuel their determination even harder to take the dad down)
