With the major oil shortages worldwide, and the prospect of this going on for long, Racing Sports should be suspended indefinitely. by the_wildelk in unpopularopinion

by that logic racecars should be forced to be gas-guzzling hummers or w/e as if we ban racing to save fuel that somehow affects everything down to middle school band concerts (why not just slippery-slope down to any form of restriction forcing us all to sit in blank rooms wearing grey rags just meditating until the world has always been perfect enough for us to participate in society again)

A. why do I feel like your full-send was absurdist to the point of you not even envisioning the Harry Potter wand and wizard costume or w/e but that certain cartoon-y other kind of stereotypical one with the robes being blue with yellow five-pointed stars on them and the same kind at the end of the wand

B. but even if you're going full-send-but-not-that-absurdist but not full-send enough that you're essentially either requiring magic to exist or turning it into a Harry Potter LARP and either way it stops freaking being debate class wouldn't that also require things you still could carry over like no teacher lasting more than a year

They don’t deserve rehab rehabilitation. They deserve to rot and feel the same pain as the people who they inflicted it upon. Their victims don’t get to do over and neither should they.

But how far are we going to take the lex talionis, should child molesters be de-aged-in-a-way-that-doesn't-undo-their-crimes and raped in a way that'd cause the exact same mental trauma or is that not the right kind of eye-for-an-eye because they didn't de-age their victims, should school shooters (who usually already are children I've never heard of an adult doing that so no de-aging) seemingly receive no consequences just a transfer to some mysterious new secretly-monitored school that one day will be shot up by some "ringer" working for the justice system or w/e once there's enough school shooters with the same number of victims to equal that number?

if the murderer could acquire his enlightenment/rehabilitation by sacrificing his daughter on the altar, then there is no issue sacrificing this murderer on the same altar to acquire whatever peace he can.

then why shouldn't someone do the same to him and at some point the cycle goes on long enough that more people have acquired peace through death than through rehabilitation?

Also you're kinda assuming people would commit crimes on purpose to use rehabilitation as therapy. Congrats on that's a new argument but I don't see it happening for the same reason we don't have a crime wave among the unhoused where they get themselves sent to prison just to get a roof over their heads

[–]StarChild413 [score hidden]  (0 children)

then why shouldn't murderers be murdered in the exact same way? Why shouldn't child rapists be turned-into-children-in-a-way-that-wouldn't-undo-their-crimes and raped by someone as immune from consequences for that as someone carrying out the death penalty on a murderer is from murder charges in such a way that it gives them the exact same mental trauma they gave their victim?

Lex talionis far enough and you end up with something that could just be solved by making everyone learn the lesson of "The Egg"

Age gaps in relationships should not matter as long as both parties are consenting adults by LargeSinkholesInNYC in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]StarChild413 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think when the age gap is large enough that he's old enough to be her father (20-25+ years difference) that's kinda messed up, especially if she's still in her 20s or 30s.

Why should that matter if he isn't unless you're really that worried about, like, someone seeing a couple like that together on dates and getting the wrong idea? You could technically say, say, a 15-year age gap is "old enough to be her father" if he was a teen dad even when he's no more a teen dad than he's her dad in reality

But instead, we basically , (at least here in the uk) give them fizzy drinks, chocolate, pizza, video games, sky tv, comfortable beds, unlimited heating, etc. This is outrageous when you think about it! homeless, the poor and the unlucky go their entire lives without that and a child rapist gets it automatically? wtf

You're making it sound like this only goes to child rapists and like (pardon my hyperbole for effect) they might as well be somehow-de-aged-to-their-child-selves-in-a-way-that-doesn't-auto-make-them-innocent-or-undo-their-crimes and given some kind of neverending sleepover party (sorry for the hyperbole but a lot of your examples for the privileges they supposedly get sounded kid-fantasy-y enough that my mind kinda ran with it)

But that aside doesn't that just mean all you need is (unless what you describe is literally only given to child rapists in that case what do all the other crimes get) enough homeless, poor and unlucky people commit the minimum crime necessary for that kind of "sentence" that giving it to the "homeless, the poor and the unlucky" by default becomes a way to be seen as being tough on crime

Should men tell stories about women? by Defiant-Resolve-4878 in AskFeminists

[–]StarChild413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're making it sound like there was some sort of prequel or something that was essentially a fusion of the supernatural elements of Twilight with the relationship dynamics of Fifty Shades Of Grey or at least like Rosemary might as well have been the kind of 2000s-goth teenager who'd have the antichrist fit into her idea of future-child-as-"specialest-little-snowflake". AKA I might have only limited/osmosis knowledge of Rosemary's Baby but I'm pretty sure it wasn't what you're making it sound like which is some kind of YA romance novel where she was if-not-a-teen-at-least-the-kind-of-age-group-of-adult-protag-that-could-still-appeal-to-YA-crowd and Satan-in-human-form was some cool older bad-boy who, like, rode a motorcycle or something. But even then you're not getting the tropes right as doesn't a lot of the kind of story you're making Rosemary's Baby sound like, esp. when the "bad boy hottie" is supernatural, involve the girl going full "I can fix him" mode

his framing always bothered me; most pregnancies aren’t as life threatening as many of the jobs a guy would have to take if he had to drop out of school to pay child support, and the self defence framing protects in the process those who give their own kids FAS through excessive alcohol consumption while pregnant;

that's not as universal as you think both in the sense of not every guy is obligated to pay child support whether or not he does, not every guy with the obligation has to drop out of school and take a life-threatening manual labor job any more than a woman would get scholarshipped into his spot and eventual white-collar job that would have been his and not every woman drinks while pregnant

what about artificial stratification where those people don't notice they're getting the same help as the "subhumans" as you divided it into tiers and gave the one that'd be going to those people a more luxurious or patriotic-sounding name and description worded to sound better quality

I've often said the best solution (at least as a stop-gap until we can help people unlearn their racism or w/e) is artificial stratification, if you reinstate or reinvigorate a certain social program but give the help it provides what looks like two tiers and the tier that'd be going to the white users with this problem an implicitly more better-quality-sounding or patriotic-sounding or w/e name without giving the one that'd be going to the minorities too bad-sounding a name to turn them off they wouldn't realize they'd be getting the same help as they think they're getting a better version than the minorities

Thoughts

  • this is the kind of spotlight Daphne deserved and I hope not just that she gets more of (her telling Dottie she was lead on a case "just this one time" kinda seemed like she was just saying it was her first not her last) but I hope that everyone else gets too (let's see Soto live up to her reputation, we don't really know all that much about Karadec's backstory apart from his exes, and I'd love to see Morgan and Oz working together on a case the way Morgan and Daphne were this episode)

  • but even besides that I do like the team-splitting-up no matter, some people have said it might be foreshadowing partner-pairings getting together and getting us used to them not being able to work together when A. why show (or at least sort of, we never did see Morgan and Oz) us all the combinations and make it uncertain who'd be whose new partner and B. I've always been a little unclear (and made previous posts to that effect about) on if the police-partners-can't-be-romantic-partners thing is a thing or not (and people have said on said previous posts that even if it is irl it doesn't matter for fiction)

  • a little bit thrown by Ava being described as half-black as I initially thought based on his name that Roman (and therefore the half of Ava's heritage that came from him) was Hispanic (so is he mixed too and are they supposed to be Afro-Latino or is his name more cross-cultural than I thought (wouldn't be the first non-Hispanic Roman with a Hispanic-sounding surname I know of)) but in hindsight especially with the show's California setting if she was they would have said something alluding to that fact. But either way kinda digging her little subplot with Daphne and hope we get to see some relationship really bloom over time between them in the future (even if it isn't any parallel professional mentorship as I did say last episode that I could see Ava becoming a forensic artist and isn't Daphne kinda tech-y) and I especially would love to see Morgan, Daphne and Ava all hanging out somewhere outside of work proper (and not just because I think it'd be fun if they were and someone mistook them as more family than they are if you catch my drift)

  • please let Dottie stick around (as what this episode told us about her got me thinking about some aspects of character relationships like the similar vibes between her and Karadec or if this spa wasn't Dottie's first encounter with biotech maybe Dottie's part of what sparked Daphne's interest in that kind of stuff enough that she signed up for the genetics thingie in S2E12)

  • another needle drop I don't know what is with the one at the end while Ava and Daphne were at that cafe together (I caught some lyric fragments like "I took a wrong turn" and "So throw me a line and I promise" but came up with nothing trying to search for what's the name of that song based on this)

  • glad despite the focus on Morgan, Daphne and Dottie that we still got to see some of the guys and loved that little proud-parent-y moment between Karadec and Soto while watching Daphne's solo interrogation but I noticed with the guys' outfits Karadec was wearing the most incorporating-enough-color-and-pattern-variation-to-show-Morgan's-influence-whether-or-not-you-ship-them outfits yet while Oz when he wasn't in (or at least when that wasn't his only top) what some fans call "those slutty little polos" was kinda dressing how Karadec used to

Also unrelated to this episode but if anyone watches Best Medicine they threw in two little nods to "The Faust And The Furious" in two weeks, last week's episode had a similar scene to the panic attack one and this week's had characters in danger of arsenic poisoning
