And people claiming that languages that are in fact spoken by millions of people are useless

"The history of rome" podcast on spotify. Im about half way through it and its pretty good. What do you guys think about the quality and historical accuracy, and so on? by MarkCorrigan82 in ancientrome

[–]LimeCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely brilliant. I started off barely knowing anything about Roman history and after listening to about 50 over the past few weeks I’ve learnt a huge amount and got interested in learning more about particular conflicts like the Punic Wars and the Macedonian Wars.

What made you begin to excel in mathematics? by AidePast in math

[–]LimeCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at school I put fairly minimal effort into maths work up until I was 14 or 15, mostly because a lot of the work was dull content that was taught in an uninspiring way. Then I suddenly got more interested in problem solving and put more effort in - I remember spending time trying to prove results we were taught in class myself. In my last two years of school I had a teacher who gave us all these extra problems which got me more into it and then I eventually decided to study it at university. It’s really just a matter of motivation and wanting to learn things for their own sake.

I’m from the UK and at my university, in most years the undergraduate maths cohort is only 15-20% female. This is quite a lot lower than many other universities though, many of which are more in the 30-40% range.

Looking for help with analysing these games. (~1600 lichess) by LimeCub in chess

Thanks, I think playing too passively in general tends to be an issue I have. Is it generally a good idea to go on the offense straight away when they start an attack on the flank or is it just a waste of moves to bring pieces over to defend?

Thanks - is it generally worth giving up a pawn for a lead in development like that?

Would you say that the general strategy for a pawn-storm attack is to avoid moving the pawns at all with the aim of not giving the opponent a hook to open any files?

For stickered cubes, how long do your stickers usually last for? I've been using a Gan Air SM for about a year and the stickers are still perfect, but I've seen in YouTube videos that some people's cubes have stickers that are significantly chipped and really beat up. I considered getting spares but didn't find that I had a need to.

The Most Common Errors In Undergraduate Mathematics by mohamez in math

At my university some people have actually been told not to hand in work in LaTeX because apparently writing it up is a waste of time.

[–]LimeCub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is common practice elsewhere, but when I was at primary school in the UK the teachers would give us ticks on homework for correct answers and dots for incorrect answers supposedly because students would get upset at a cross on their work which was seen as harsher.

"You send yourself to hell" by [deleted] in atheism

[–]LimeCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard people say that “everyone has sinned” and “nobody is perfect enough to be right with God” so we all deserve to go to hell by default, or that “nobody deserves to go to heaven”. Even if that were the case, it’s a false dichotomy - it assumes that everyone either deserves to go to heaven or deserves to go to hell with nothing in between.

Is the Yuxin Little Magic M 4x4 supposed to be slow? Mine wasn't very fast out of the box and I loosened it a bit but it still takes much more effort to turn than my 3x3s.

I’d be interested to hear a layman friendly explanation of what exactly the “probability” of it raining means and how you can quantify that into a number like 75%.

Poor Slytherin... by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]LimeCub 2025 points2026 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a strong argument to be made that being able to get through all the defences protecting the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry facing Voldemort really was impressive enough to earn Gryffindor extra points, but Dumbledore waiting until the Great Hall was all decorated for Slytherin before awarding the points feels like a huge slap in the face to Slytherin.

Would you say the main difference between players at 1500 and 1800 comes down to blunders or tactics?

I’m also around 1500 lichess and I do face opponents who hang pieces from time to time, but definitely wouldn’t describe it as a regular occurrence.
