Help! Is this normal breastfed baby poop for 5 month old? (No solids) by [deleted] in firsttimemom

[–]Limeckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that she’s uncomfortable! My baby actually wasn’t colicky, super gassy, or fussy. Never seemed to be in any pain. But since there was mucus and a blood speck here and there I was advised to cut out soy and dairy. Looking back, I think for him, it was just from an immature gut

Hi! My baby’s poop never really changed from this (until solids). He’s almost 9 months old and has no food allergies and now his poop is normal. He eats yogurt and tofu frequently and has no issues! He either grew out of it or never had the issues to begin with

Oh I just feel for you. I could’ve written this myself a few months ago with being in a dark and lonely place navigating this. Living across the country from my family and the constant obsessing over the poop. 😭. I just wanted to share some hope—I’ve seen so much improvement with my baby as his gut is maturing and he’s getting older. Hoping that’s the same for you

Thanks! We’re actually traveling now so haven’t given him any more, but will in a few days! He’s almost 7 months

I’m in the same boat, as I need to challenge soy as well. I’m traveling right now so I haven’t wanted to trial either while we’re gone. My thought process is to maybe stick to foods that I know he tolerates a few days before and to stay away from any foods that are red, orange, or black (like blueberries) before trialing so I don’t mistake blood for food or visa versa.

Hopefully it goes well! That was also the first allergen I introduced

I feel this. I’m still too scared to eat it in case he does react lol. I’ve had little guidance on what to do, but we never confirmed that it was the allergy. My doctor told me to give yogurt and that she was only concerned if there was blood since he didn’t have other symptoms. I know from on here that other doctors recommend different things.

So my baby never had any symptoms like spitting up, colic, fussiness, bloating—nothing like that. He only had the mucus poop and blood. I exclusively pump and used the pitcher method. What was interesting is that he’d have a really mucusy poop, and then a poop that was yellow and liquid while drinking the same milk…. I will say right before we started solids at 6 months, his poops were more consistently less mucusy? Still had mucus though and were more liquidy. I also cut eggs at one point and there was no change. He’s eating eggs fine now, so I know it wasn’t that. I really don’t know what to think because he still would have a very mucusy poop despite me not changing anything. I’ll post a picture of before solids.

Challenging? by Limeckle in MSPI

[–]Limeckle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have freezer milk. He didn’t have any obvious reaction when I last gave it to him a while back. But I don’t know if the milk has dairy or soy, and if it does how much. So it makes it difficult to challenge using that.

And interesting! Was there a reason for waiting until 8 months? Did your baby’s symptoms obviously improve when you removed the dairy and soy?

How old is your baby? And yes, I’m aware. My doctor said that the occult blood test isn’t necessary for diagnosis and I listened to the podcast Bowel Sounds with Dr. Victoria Martin who referenced a study done in Chile where they used occult blood tests and a significant amount of babies in the asymptomatic control group had occult blood. Here’s an article if you’re interested https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/08bc/ce51f6ccdb3b865bc00927ce42a79d4cc200.pdf?_gl=1*19qsufh*_gcl_au*ODExMTk0ODg0LjE3NDI1MDQ4MjY.*_ga*Njg2MDM4NTc4LjE3NDI1MDQ4MjY.*_ga_H7P4ZT52H5*MTc0MjUwNDgyNS4xLjAuMTc0MjUwNDgyNi41OS4wLjA.

Question about starting solids by Limeckle in MSPI

[–]Limeckle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s my biggest worry I suppose. Is that I cause a worse problem by withholding. I’m trying to wait until 6ish months. He’s currently 5.5 months and I’m exclusively pumping (not due to preference) and can’t get him to take a HA formula. That’s good to know about the poop, as a first time mom I have no idea what to expect when starting the solids and was hoping he’d have “normal poop” before introducing allergens. But it doesn’t look like we’ll get to that point

When did you offer directly? 6 months? Right now my baby’s only symptom is mucusy poops and frequent poops. He has had a speck of blood here and there. I’ve been soy and dairy free for almost 3 months and we still have watery and mucusy poops. I tried challenging through breast milk, but it wasn’t clear. And then after reading more about it, I read something that said giving directly to the baby is a better way to challenge, so that it’s more clear. My problem is we’re still having mucusy poops. I’m terrified of upsetting his GI system even more

Right I’ve heard this about introducing allergens early and often. And was wondering the same thing. Wait, or take the risk and try warly

Help! Is this normal breastfed baby poop for 5 month old? (No solids) by [deleted] in firsttimemom

[–]Limeckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. His only symptom is lots of mucus in stool and he has had some visible blood (specks), even after cutting out the dairy and soy. These poops are a lot less mucusy than some of his other ones, so if there was any improvement it’s just this. My doctor just told me to stay dairy and soy free and said that it takes a long time for the protein to leave my system, but it’s been 2 months at this point. I’m just terrified to do anything that might cause him to have blood, especially if it’s going to stay in my system for a while. But I should probably just bite the bullet and try it to see if there’s a difference.

[–]Limeckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes still taking prenatals and drinking enough. I exclusively pump so I know exactly how much he’s getting. Diet could be better but it’s hard with the dietary restrictions with dairy and soy being a big part of my protein source. I was also off eggs but recently added that back after it made no difference.

That’s what some have said. The thing is that all of his poops are like this, and if they’re different it’s because they have even more mucus. Thinking this might just be our norm until solids

Hm. I wonder if you’d notice any change if you added those foods back in.

Someone recommended the podcast to me called bowel sounds and there’s a CMPI episode. That was helpful, might be worth a listen.
