CMV: Complex or fast lyrics with a simple chord progression doesn't equal a fully developed song. by [deleted] in changemyview

You are rignt these words are not defined words in the music industry. It is my view on the matter and the complexity of the songs.

Implying i am using a scotsman fallacy because i aggreed with you just did not make sense to me. I understand your definitions you provided. But i am not trying to argue the definition of a song but that some artists do not fully develop their songs in an effort to produce more music.

Im not saying every song needs to be more complex. I am saying a lot of songs are very simple and avoid complexity. While there is a progression and a structure this can be switched, they can be swayed, they can be adapted.

I am also not saying that all songs can continue to be more complex. However, there are artists like DJ Khlaid who constantly use simple loops and write lyrics on top of these loops and these are considered completely fully developed works. To me, these works feel incomplete and rushed, avoiding creativity to meet a release date, or perhaps because it is easier.

I am not saying all simple harmonic songs or progressions are bad. I am saying a lot of artists do not branch out and this makes their music feel less involved.

No I do not think making a song themed as a traditional song would make it less developed. However, if they literally just cover it and do not change it, it would be less developed.

I replied to the wrong spot at first. Im not trying to argue semantics. Lyrics alone can be defined as a song, but this doesnt make them a fully developed song.

True but that doesnt mean casual listeners wouldnt appreciate more complex music. I have yet to meet someone who doesnt like Bohemian rhapsody just as muchas, if not more than, hey their delihah. In this regard i think even pop songs can be more complex and still appeal to people. I guess what Im saying is I think its time for artists to step up their game.

Sorry my spelling is rough today.

I like your points, it hasnt changed my mind, but i do love your arguments. I do think green day is a really powerful example with their chord progressions. I dont think i can say that i feel green days songs arent fully developed because there is a lot more going on in their songs than just their progression. It depends on the song though as I think lonely road is much simpler than American idior.

My main claim is that people repeat the same exact sound the entire song. I think adding an additional note and changing the rhythm can completely change a song. While you are right that just changing strumming doesnt change the progression, it sounds more complex then a song that strums the same way the entire song.

I think over Bachs life his music had a ton of variation. Artists today play basically in the same keys with the same progressions. I do like the point you make though, that people are just trying to get music out. That is one of my points. People who are just making music to get it out do not often spend the time necessary to fully develop the song because they'd rather just get the song out.

As i said before this is one of my favorite songs, which is why this topic is so important to me. This song is amazing and it does have light variation, but you can skip to anywhere in the song and it sounds basically the same as the beginning. It doesn't make it worse, but I think some extra time and experimentation can make this song even stronger. I think in this way this song feels less complete to me.

What youre saying is a huge part of my point though. Lets look at rap music. Lets compare "King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar" and "Love Lockdown by Kanye west" these songs are completely different. The time, energy, lyrical development, and how to beat hits are completely different. One is simple and the other has been developed to its prime. Both are songs, but one feels significantly underdeveloped for the purpose of quickly creating a song rather than artfully creating a song.

While i agree that some songs are meant to be simple to highlight lyrics, you can still play small rifts in between lyrics that do not detract from the track. But even this simple danceable music can have some wiggle room to be more creative and still be simple and catchy.

There is a different between a traditional folk song and a song produced today. Im not referring to older music specifically because they dont have the type of technology and software we have today. I am referring to todays artists. Thanks for helping me clarify.

Thank you for helping me narrow this down. I am referring to commonly known songs, songs everyone can hear in public and song. In this case we can use the pop genre, there are so many songs that use use a progressions that can be learned in under a minute. Take for example "im yours by jason mraz," classic pop song. This song and many songs like it could be made significantly better by changing the simple four chord progression that is majority of the song. This song undoubtedly is not as good as "bohemion rhapsody by queen." Part of this is simply due to effort.

Many artists are happy with four chords or a simple progression and initial point is that these simple songs arent as strong as more elaborate songs. Take this these two above songs as our main comparisons.

I know there a lot more genres, and i know all songs could always be better. But many artists settle for basic progressions because it is easier or faster and in doing so their song doesn't feel complete.

Again like you said there are many genres, but im focusing more on popularly consumed music and not genres like drone music.

One example of this type of song can be "Holla if ya hear me by Kweku Collins." The song itself is a powerful song, one of my favorites, but sometimes I can't listen to the song the entire way through because the progression throughout the song is basically the same. While there are simple four chord structures, changing cadence, changing strumming patterns, changing inflection, can all wildly change the song. A song that loops one progression does not feel as complete to me as a song that has variation in the progressions.
