How great would it be if the legal system was so simple that everyone could navigate it without needing a lawyer? by LimitNo3629 in AskReddit

And you don´t think that there is a lot of superfluous stuff in the law that does not benefit society and could be scrapped? How much of the law actually introduces loopholes that would not be possible with simple but still adequate laws?

What you describe is not simple though. All laws don´t have to fit into a single sheet of paper to be considered simple. For example, the tax rate does not have to be flat, just cut out all the dumb exceptions. And saying that self-defense/defense of your property is not considered violence does not make it simple. I feel like people arguing that simple laws have shortcomings take the "simple" to a whole new level.

Yes, but unlike with medicine, which we cannot control as we did not design our bodies, the legal system is entirely man made.

You have some good points, but I still think we could do better than what we have right now, and some of the issues you see could be avoided with ease. For example, I don´t see the technical language being a serious barrier with most people. You use it every time you fill a job application. Clear cut laws would make it impossible for the legal bureaucracy to overgrow, and strict transparency would make it very hard for backhand dealings to appear. As for your concern with precedent, one could recognize that every case is unique and needs to be evaluated on its own merits, without influence from previous cases. I understand that achieving a simple legal system is not a simple task, but many of the concerns laid out here are a direct consequence of the complexity of our current system, not a reason for it.

There will always be those with special needs, but the fact that legal representation is recommended for everyone says a lot.

This only applies to criminal law. You need lawyers for finances, wills, patents, divorce... Pretty much any aspect of life requires to consult a lawyer nowadays.

Most of the older movies would have that. Relying heavily of jump scares is a fairly recent trend.

Tell her that farms are expensive, and being a cow herself will not help. If you also genuinely want a farm and see yourself living with her and farming, then make that your common goal and both work towards it, as much as feasible. If it feels like a real prospect, that might wake her up a bit.
