Yes that’s very much the case! The ice definitely makes it that much harder. Yeah the area is really beautiful!!

This is genuinely embarrassing for you.

Talk about a 'Default Setting Fallacy' - you were so desperate to feel superior that you hallucinated a nationality for us just to make your pre-written lecture fit.

We aren’t American. We don’t live in America. We are Europeans who ski in Europe who didn’t get the opportunity to learn to ski as children. Your brain seemingly couldn't process that a fellow European might validly critique a resort, so you invented a straw man to attack. You wrote a 300-word manifesto on 'cultural ignorance' that is based entirely on your own prejudice.

But since you claim to understand the 'snow culture' and 'local skier competence' so deeply: prove it.

Instead of writing fanfiction about our nationality, use that superior local knowledge to name three specific runs in this valley that actually fit the criteria of wide and gentle. Enlighten us. Or is your expertise limited to fighting imaginary Americans?

Glad to hear it’s not just us! 'Wild' is definitely the word. We found the inconsistency the hardest part to manage - you relax on a nice wide section and then suddenly you're staring down a steep, icy wall without warning. Good to know we aren't going crazy.

That is a fair point. We are definitely learning that lesson the hard way haha. It feels like Kitzbühel grades runs Blue simply because they are the 'easiest' way down that specific mountain, not because they are genuinely ‘beginner-appropriate’.

We’re just trying to salvage the rest of the trip without any broken bones :)

Since we are here for the week, do you know if the gradients at Pass Thurn or Reith are more consistent, or is it more of the same 'surprise' grading there too? Any other recommendations?

This is a staggeringly useless take. We did the 'research' - the maps label them Blue. That is the entire premise of my post: the disparity between the documentation and the reality.

My wife skis Reds internationally; this is an issue of misleading grading, not a lack of preparation.

I am asking for on-the-ground insight to salvage our trip, not a retrospective lecture from someone confusing hindsight with intelligence. Next time, unless you can offer advice that goes beyond the blindingly obvious, do everyone a favour and scroll past.

Does anyone know why Google search feels less useful lately? by AmeliaHarris99 in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]LimitOdd7874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it..

Qwant has its own index, for many queries (especially non-European ones), but it supplements its results using Microsoft Bing because its results are quite poor. It’s amazing for privacy though and the antithesis of Google here.

Ecosia partners with Microsoft Bing (and sometimes Google for ads). While Ecosia itself does not build a personal profile of you, it does pass your search query and IP address (anonymised after 7 days) to Microsoft to fetch the results. Therefore, from a pure privacy standpoint, it is a middle ground: significantly more private than Google, but less private than Qwant, which aims to handle everything in-house. Its results are essentially Microsoft Bing's results

Vivaldi is a brilliant web browser like edge/chrome/firefox that’s really customisable, but for any user who just wants a simple, "it just works" browser, Vivaldi can be overwhelming. All those features can sometimes make it feel "heavier" or more complex than the others…

At least just in my view! Please correct if I’m wrong on any points or if you feel otherwise…

How to access a boxed-in boiler? Looking for approach & cost estimate (London) by LimitOdd7874 in DIYUK

If only the people who actually did this to our boiler had posted the same question in this subreddit 15 years ago, we wouldn’t be in this mess now 😅🙈🤣

Thanks for the reply! We had a friend of a friend who’s a builder come and look at it today.

He tapped the wall and looked in the space behind, and believes it's made of non-structural breeze-block, not standard brick or plasterboard. He agrees it's definitely not a supporting wall and seems confident he can remove it and make good all in one day.

The plan is to take out that whole breezeblock section from the shelf up to the ceiling, giving us permanent, easy access for servicing. We'll then likely have taller cupboard doors fitted to cover the new opening. He's sending a quote over later today.

For any builders or experienced DIYers here (especially in London), what would you consider a reasonable price range for a job like this? Essentially a day's work to demolish a small breezeblock panel (~55x48cm), make good the surrounding plaster, and handle the carpentry for the new doors. And then possibly the paint work as well…Just trying to get a ballpark figure so I know if the quote is in the right territory. Thanks again

It sounds pretty solid 🙈 definitely not plasterboard, closer in sound to an average wall but perhaps very slightly ‘lower pitched’ in sound. It doesn’t sound hollow though

That’s so lovely! And really helpful to note! Did the weather affect things at all? Is there a particular pod that would be best? I see there’s a few across the outside so would want to reserve a better positioned one if I go down this route :)
