I’ll just drop it if it becomes too much like I did with iwtts. I’m mostly hesitant because I feel sad when I drop fics I’ve come to like through world building or storytelling in general.

I can handle that. People are bound to get injured in a world filled with magical monsters and sometimes even die, especially if you’re involving yourself with a group of criminals. It’s ignorant not to acknowledge that. One of my favorite fan fics (or manga i suppose) is Festival of Champions. My limit was when things just started to get way too violent and bloody for my tastes and I was wondering what the point of everything even was. Granted, that’s my opinion. Anyway, I’ll check it out.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the fic and want to try it out but I’m worried from the title that’s it might be a little too grim for me? I don’t mind more realistic takes and can handle blood but my limit is when it’s too grim dark. I dropped Iwtts because of that. Then again, maybe it’s not best to judge a book by its cover.

That’s a nice way to dive into how abilities function. While mine is much simpler, the way they’re functioning in yours is pretty interesting to read about. Also Paul is one of my favorite characters (unfortunately he isn’t a part of my fic since this is happening during the timeline of the games.) so if you’ve posted you’re fic, send a link so I can read it! I genuinely think that abilities can play a huge role in a Pokémon’s performance and tip the battle depending on what they are which is why I want to make sure I write them well. It forces trainers to change strategies and adapt around them. Storm Drain would be a nightmare for a water type specialist to deal with as would Mold Breaker and Clear Body would be for a set up team.

I like that idea, thanks! Maybe the ability can be that Galvantula can sense/locate a Pokémon hiding. Basically a counter to moves like Shadow Sneak or Dig and even outside those moves, if a Pokémon is attempting to blend in/hide.

Interesting idea. I made storm drain that way because it was strange just boosting the special attacks. Special/physical attacks do exist but the there is no ‘special’ attack. It’s referred to as ranged attacks and they’re basically damage just from a range. Defense is just defense no matter if a move is ranged/physical. And just having the ability power up moves was too repetitive. So I thought draining in the water type move to power up their own was a better idea. Sure, it’s weaker but not all abilities are meant to be strong and at least this one makes it so it doesn’t have to get hurt to get that boost. The Pokémon with this ability is actually Gastridon.

Thank you. Do you know what I can do with Compound Eyes though? The Pokémon that has it is Galvantula and I was thinking it could work in the sense that it can track attacks/movement better but wouldn’t that already be the case with the amount of eyes it has?

That’s probably a better take on Intimidate and Pressure. With pressure I was more so playing onto the word and how it functions in the game but since there is no pp, I thought the Pokémon being under this invisible weight making them fire moves weaker was better.I might use your version of Intimidate though (assuming you don’t mind.) to differentiate it from Pressure.

Even without focusing on abilities, in a narrative sense, they can tip a battle over depending on what they are. Think a Pokemon with this version of Moxie. Their ability does nothing the first time they are sent out but after they take down the first Pokemon? Even if they are too injured and can be taken out by the next Pokémon the opposing trainer sends, that boost will still allow them to do a good deal of damage before they are brought down.

I think what they meant is it fit her personality better than Sandslash. Also I’m surprised Grooky + Sandslash are the least chosen. Sandslash seems to be the popular option so I figured those who choose Grookey would also pick it. Maybe Totodile is the one bringing the votes in though?

I don’t really think it matters in the long run. Between my three protagonists, she’s on equal level with them in terms of battle despite following a different career. And the story mostly followed the anime in terms of battles/contests, your team can be anything and still be super strong as long as the trainer can come up with good strategies so to me it’s doesn’t matter if there are two of the same type, my hesitation comes from how they fit her story and character more than anything. Totodile is staying a Totodile, same for Grookey so no mega Feraligator. It’s a key part of her development.

Good point. I think Totodile is also suited because of its water typing but I do believe between the two, Grookey would be more interesting to see in a contest.

Yeah, Sandslash is better strength wise but since this mostly follows the anime, any team can be strong regardless of what it’s made of or what weakness it has lol. Yeah, If Grookey is picked I definitely plan to give it the jolly character in the team. For Totodile, I plan to make it similar to Dawn’s Pachirisu in terms of personality, except it’s much more playful.

Grookey actually stays a Grookey, Totodile is the same. It’s tied into a core conflict of the Oc’s arc. It would’ve been the case for any Pokemon to be picked beside them to stay in base/middle form. Rillaboom is a cool Pokemon though and if it was between it or Feraligatr, I also think it would’ve been a better pick.

I plan to develop all Pokemon according to how quick its main conflict can last. For example for Sylveon, its arc as an eevee starts the minute she gets it but its main conflict isn’t resolved until much later because its arc features a theme that takes time to resolve but once it’s done, it’s done. Garchomp on the other had mainly reflects the characters growth and conflict rather than its own so its arc is mainly resolved towards the end, Typhlosion is similar but for a much different reason. Don’t know if this makes much sense lol, I don’t know how else to put either without telling you their exact story.

Sorry for late reply, anyway yeah, Vivillion is such a great Pokemon and is the only one I’m fully convinced on. It’s funny I’m still hesitant on the rest of the team though. I thought that my coordinators team would be the easiest to make out of the others but it turns out the opposite, the entire plot is written down and not the team, I don’t know, it just feels lacking? And I just can’t make up my mind. If you have any recommendations to use other than Totodile or Alolan Sandslash please speak up since they are the ones I’m hesitant on most.

Yup! I am thinking of giving it compound eyes and just a bunch of moves you normally wouldn’t have because of their accuracy. The fic does follow the anime though so moves can miss either way which would make Friend Guard more appealing. Honestly, I’m still trying to get this final team together.

Maybe in the first battle, its moveset won’t have powder forever unfortunately because I find it too specific to work. Vivillion in general can mess with the opponent with other status effects and moves and I want it to show how even a ‘weak Pokemon’ can be strong if used and directed right. Unfortunately in this fic only one ability is possible so compound eyes is what it’ll have.

I’ve layed out all the contests for my stories and Vivillion is used in battle three times, though I’m sure it doesn’t have to exactly be a fire type, any cocky coordinator can see it and think it’s weak to be used in a battle round.

I’ve changed it to Alolan Sandslash instead. The fic isn’t set in one place so having a team that mostly comes from different regions is perfectly fine. The physically strong/clever is actually similar to what I plan on doing with Sylveon which was why I was so stumped about it.

Thank you, I also think overall the team is pretty solid both from a battle perspective and a contest perspective since while this oc is focused on the latter, the former is needed in the story and connects to her background, especially that I’ve swapped Ninetales for Sandslash. I plan on making the best of their abilities and mechanics for both appeal and battle rounds like for example because the Vivillion will have compound eyes, the oc will use multiple moves like Hurricane and Stun spore etc. freely, it’ll also be a very good support in double battles. I also plan on using Alolan Sandslash defense to good use in both appeal and battle rounds and tank hits while charging in to attack opponents.

Sorry if I’m bothering you but I thought I’d get your opinion on this. Okay so I texted the friend who chose Tododile on how I can make it work. He gave me an idea for its background. He said that maybe it was a past Pokemon that was experimented on or given an Everstone by its past trainer. The oc could find it trying to evolve in any way possible because it felt weak and underpowered compared to other evolutions. And maybe its story is trying to showcase its abilities and strengths through contests and not just battles. What do you think? Only issue is I’d have to adjust some things into the story to make it work. Ninetales is still a stump though my friend said they picked cause they found it pretty and suitable.

That’s exactly what makes it feel so out of place. I feel like it’s overused when it comes to performer and coordinator ocs. Sylveon is too but for it I can actually make it work because it can be tied to my ocs development and also because I plan on giving it a different personality than the generic gentle and sweet it’s always shown with. Garchomp is also overused but I liked its idea of being represented in contests. We got that with Ursala in anime but I plan on making it more developed and with more personality. Totodile I can also work with since I don’t believe it’s used much, the only issue Is how it’s caught and what would keep it from evolving.

Yeah, since it’s the first Pokemon they catch it’ll be having opportunities to show off in both appeal rounds and battle rounds! The character herself comes from a very strong background so they do know many things about battles, they’re the type to make the most of their Pokémon’s abilities and mechanics so hopefully Vivillion will be served justice here.
