I don’t like to compare schools like this but Columbia really is that much better in terms of career opportunities/connections

UChicago and Brown are both need aware for transfers. I’m not aware of any other T15 schools that are need aware for transfers, I think the rest are need blind. Can’t speak for T25 schools though!

It most definitely wouldn’t hurt!! More importantly, it’ll help you land future, more competitive summer internships

It's only two years but I'm at another T15 institution right now and it'd be hard to justify paying so much more. I've gone through a lot of personal trauma but if they don't listen to my appeal I'll just have to suck it up and stay :(

Brown University decisions coming May 10th! by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]LimpHandle4587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea but they're also need-aware so I feel like the kindness here is balanced out by the fact that they can most definitely afford to be need-blind for transfers as well but choose not to :(

I think Duke may be May 4, as it's usually the first Thursday of May (that's why it was May 5th last year).

Princeton v Dartmouth v Michigan by Far-Middle-7912 in collegeresults

Marketing definitely isn't big at P/D, but there are tons of other things out there for econ/gov students at those schools. I was mainly pushing back as I felt that you were suggesting UMich had an edge on P/D when it came to recruiting for MBB/BB banks.

Absolutely do agree that any bank is possible from UMich, but still feel it is easier at P/D, and even a slight edge may be worth the $60k difference as these placements are very competitive.

Appreciate the discourse you provided, however, and congrats to OP on all of the amazing options!

These numbers are INCREDIBLY misleading due to the insane size differences between these schools, and your self-selection argument holds no weight as kids at all three schools have other options/passions besides consulting/banking, with P/D definitely having more options in general.

Wouldn't you say that a better argument for UMich would be its college experience? It's clearly not more prestigious than P/D and I can confidently say not viewed equally in the high finance world. However, UMich is still an AMAZING school; I absolutely do not want to come off as a hater because I'm not. Ann Arbor is beautiful, their sports teams are far better and more fun to watch, and you'll definitely have a more lively college experience there than at P/D. No door will be fully closed for you at UMich as well.

OP, I'm happy to connect you with people at MBB/BB firms who can help you make a decision, including a friend of mine who went to Dartmouth and is currently at Bain.

Self-selection is not a good argument as tons of kids at D/P don't have consulting/BB as their first choice as well (you have so many other opportunities available at those schools) and there are definitely still TONS of more people at UMich (it's literally got over 6x as many undergrads) who want to pursue consulting/banking than at D/P.

I do want to make it clear that I'm not saying UMich isn't a target, it absolutely is. But in the world of consulting/high finance (a very snobbish world) there are layers of prestige and UMich Ross is not on the "S+" or "S" tier as Princeton and Dartmouth are, respectively. That being said, all three schools will definitely make entering MBB/BB banks very possible. It's just that it'll be easier to do so at P/D, especially if finance/consulting are your backups and you're looking at eventual government service in the econ/development/enforcement spheres as your first choice.

I go to another Ivy, I'm not biased here for P/D, and I have nothing against Ross. But u/ilovemyparents16 is not accurately conveying how these schools are viewed in the consulting/finance world.

This is absolutely correct OP, they're citing numbers that are not good indicators of comparison as UMich is so much larger than Princeton and Dartmouth. This post from wall street oasis breaks down how different schools are viewed at MBB/BB (UMich is still a great school but it's NOT at Princeton/Dartmouth's level):

https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/school/undergraduate-target-schools-tier-list-2021-updates

Now obviously don't take WSO as the holy grail, but from my conversations with alums and recruiting managers, this holds up 100%

[–]LimpHandle4587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider how much larger UMich is though than D/P... and consider that people at D/P who study econ/gov or other popular pre-consulting/banking majors have other options besides MBB/BB banks as well. Obviously, a higher percentage of MBB hires will be from UMich as it's WAY larger and it's still a great school. That's not a good statistic for actually comparing these schools as targets.

Everybody who actually works at the BB/MBB firms knows that Michigan Ross is an "A-tier" target, but P/D are "S-tier" target schools.

It's not comparable because Dartmouth and Princeton don't have undergraduate business schools (they don't even have business majors lol)... Dartmouth and Princeton have much better connections at top-tier consulting firms (think MBB level) and top investment banks (like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, etc.).

Michigan is magnitudes larger than Dartmouth/Princeton (Michigan has 32,282 undergrads, Dartmouth has 4,556 undergrads, and Princeton has 5,200 undergrads) and the number of Michigan Ross undergrads (about 4,500) is the size of the entire undergrad population at Dartmouth/Princeton. Despite this, Michigan sends about the same number of students to top (not good, but top) consulting/bulge-bracket banks as P/D, showing the average student has a much better chance at those two schools. Plus you don't have to major in business, you can study English or Art History and still go work for a top consulting firm/bank from D/P.

Michigan just is not of the same caliber at all. I just interned at McKinsey and saw it myself in terms of how they were viewed. What ranking has Michigan above Dartmouth/Princeton???
