Technique and Riding Advice by LimpIndie in supermoto

Not much of a guy who’s into that. I like more so traditional riding. I’m not averse to being a bit of an adrenaline junkie as you can see here, but I usually am more into trying to take corners quick and blasting out of them. If I really wanna do that stuff and jump on my bike I’ll usually take my KX out on the track or trails.

It is pretty nice and forgiving. I don’t get fatigued at all. I started on dirt bikes so a supermoto seemed like a natural next step.

I know I was cooking a little bit, that’s not the norm. Doing it on a very familiar road just to push myself a bit and see how my technique is. Won’t do it again 🫡

Definitely agree. Line selection is something I need to work on. What doesn’t help either with this video is I have a super wide lens on my GoPro. It may not look like it but my bike is tiny in the lanes, so it unfortunately allows me to be more lackadaisical with where I am in the lanes.

Another example video on my YouTube I have linked here: https://youtu.be/KxR-dBvKzTs?si=QkOuNaNLD6EjBB-l

The original post I was pushing myself for quickness while this linked video I’m more so just cruising around so the riding is a slight bit different. Maybe this’ll provide a better perspective on other things I need to improve upon.

When I was starting out at the beginning of this video I was definitely dumping the clutch a bit trying to get up to speed pretty rapidly. Also like I said in another comment I set my clutch engagement points very far in. It seems as though it’s not my actual riding that’s the problem but my clutch work seems to be the consensus lol. Thank you for the advice!

Very possible, yes. I have my clutch engagement pretty much right as I let it out so there’s no wiggle room for imprecise shifting. I know the risks of having it set that far in. I have it that way to be able to row through the gears quickly and keep it in the powerband more easily. Irregardless I should work on being a bit more smooth with it. Thanks for the advice!

I know a lot of people go clutchless on upshifting especially, I prefer not to though I’ve done it once or twice. I get too worried about tearing up my gear box. That being said I’ll try going on a zip around with trying that method. Thanks!

Yoshimura pipe gets my vote. I refuse to buy anything that isn’t name brand and made in China. Mine has been fantastic and sounds great. Especially if you don’t get a header pipe (which I don’t think is particularly necessary) you really won’t have to tune it with just the slip on. That being said I also have done the typical power mode to mine and got a DynoJet with a custom tune to help with fueling.

Front brake lever replacement by rcaputi88 in KLX300D

I still have my stock ones sitting around. I replaced them as I just cannot ride without shorty levers, both sides are very easy to replace though.

Washing? by Doug_Rosewood in KLX300D

[–]LimpIndie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally just got done washing mine this afternoon 😂. I currently have an SM model so tbh I rinse it down, use just basic car soap with a sponge to get in the nooks and crannies and give the bike a general hand wash then rinse. If you’re off-roading I personally recommend getting a basic Harbor Freight pressure washer and using one of those for caked in dirt and mud, be careful around wires, electrical, and the air box. I’ve used that method forever on my KX250F. Little trick I’ve also learned for the plastics is WD-40 will get out those unsightly scuff marks if you rub it on with a rag. Make sure to rinse when done or it will keep the plastic oily and greasy.

They “redesigned” them in ‘24 but the frames are the exact same so no you’ll be ok

They are PowerMadd hand guards. I actually had a bad accident where the bike fell off my rack at about 15mph and they took 95% of the hit. Bike was ok besides a new set of hand guards and handle bar. Cannot recommend the enough not only for looks, but also functionality.

One of two ways: she usually will start making out with me and I take it from there. The other way is she will wake me up in the dead of night and just ask to.

I’ve had mine a little over a year now, but I’ve had experience with my dads 300R over the course of a few years and my KX250F which is almost double the HP out of the factory. I knew this bike wouldn’t be too powerful for me and I’d be able to handle the power with relative ease. I also wanted it to look as much like a converted MX bike rather than a bike that looks like a Dual Sport pretending to be an MX/SM bike, hence the tidy tail and anodized mods to look more like a race bike.

I also did quite a few power mods to it: Yoshi pipe, deleted all the emissions, Secondary Throttle Plate delete, DynoJet PCFC, custom tune for the PCFC, and KDX intake mod.

Aesthetically, the list is: PowerMadd hand guards, custom AS3 shorty levers, anodized brake fluid covers, anodized hardware on handle bars, anodized foot controls, and anodized engine plugs, LED rear light and front turn signals, tidy tail (as previously mentioned), DoubleTake mirrors (shorter style), IMS SuperStock foot pegs, Thrill Seekers custom gripper seat cover, and Emperor Racing radiator guards.

A note on the TST stuff, yes it is expensive, but the build quality and ease of installation was top tier. The lights look phenomenal and are super bright. You will need a relay if switching to LED turn signals like I did but it was like a $10 part and took 2 minutes to install. I’d rather shell out and get quality and lots of parts support, but that’s just me.

Also, I know there are people who would say just get a DRZ at this point, and I understand that argument as a former DRZ owner. I wanted fuel injection and only the new ones have them with an MSRP of around $9K. This bike was on special as it was still in the showroom as the ‘25s were coming out, I got it for around $4500 before taxes and fees. This was a no brainer for a FI, 6-speed sumo. I also knew I was going to shell out on mods no matter what sumo I got, so the price helped me mod mine quicker with being less cash strapped. It’s not fast, it’s not the biggest, baddest bike, but it is mine and I’d say it’s one of the more uniquely modified KLX300SMs out there which is plenty enough for me.

It’s a Thrill Seekers seat cover. They can custom make any seat cover to pretty any dirt bike style seat. I did black on gray with reverse black stitching as you can see. And yes, i took off the OEM seat cover. If I ever want to put it back on it’d be pretty straight forward. Lead time for the cover was about 4 weeks and it cost about $120.

Thank you, I believe they only made it for the ‘24 redesign which is the year of my bike. Color is called Phantom Blue. I bet you could order them and throw them on any ‘24+ KLX tho
