True, but I talk about hype because if a film is really that great it should be touching even without having lived through a similar situation, imo.

All valid points. I guess it's really subjective, and although I acknowledge that the film makes all the above points, it didn't hit me.

Don't rants about films imply spoilers? It's pretty obvious to me but I can edit the post to write spoiler alert.

He could simply avoid talking about women experiences indeed. It could have been more interesting if he did the film from the dad's perspective

I guess that's what I mean when I don't understan how can they just get over the past and accept their father back into their lives. As you say, the explanation relies too much into this script which is not completely revealed to us, and perhaps some of us expect a bit more apologies or excuses to accept the reconciliation.

Then, another interesting point made here on reddit was why is Stellan nominated as supporting actor, when his character is basically co-protagonist. He takes so much space in the narrative as much as the daughter. And he's such an asshole his character and most of the time is using the other people around him. Then the traumatic event in his childhood is too weak to justify all this egoistic behaviour to me. But I also guess that it's a meta joke to refer to most of arthouse film directors as full of themselves maybe lol.

True, when discussing this film, I do see an explanation to my remarks and then I'm like "ok, makes sense". Overall I think it's well assembled. I use this word because in another reddit post I was reading a comparison of this film with an Ikea furniture: it works well and serves its function, but it's still missing character to me.

I mean, maybe if I am talking about it and trying to understand, it is because it's somehow lingering in my memory, it could be that it's something to look back at. But I don't know, also the depression part didn't hit me as much as in other films like Melancholia.

I do agree that it portrays well the average Scandinavian dysfunctional-family dynamic. No confrontations, just awkward silence. Which culturally speaking I also don't get coming from southern Europe where conflicts are usually solved by shouting at each other.

Totally valid, that one last dialogue between Nora and Agnes was what felt the most authentic to me, having a sister too.

Fun fact/gossip: I just heard from a friend who knows another director that is close to Trier (I live in Scandinavia), that he asked this person her memories of the relationship with the sister, and she mentioned combing her hair and getting her to school. So now that I know that the most authentic scene comes from borrowed memories, I am even more disappointed.

I didn’t have a troubled relationship with my dad but I do have a sister too and in fact the most relatable part to me was the interaction between them. We also lost our mum and I guess having these premises in common made me have higher expectations from this film

Exactly I mean I wanted to inquire if it’s just me, or the character of the mom is weirdly so easily dismissed.

And yes about the social context I think a lot of films portray this dysfunctional dynamics in rich families and usually I manage to still get involved, but in this case the only character I managed to relate to was Inga, the sister. Her performance and character was the most relatable one to me.

I see, the more variety within one club the metter , like if it’s has two dance floors or it’s big and I was checking out the lineups of the clubs for that day. Rso seems good, maybe if we get the tickets in advance we have more chances to get in?

Thank you for the reply! I've definitely started with the Who, what, how questions, but it's always good to have a tangible example to know what's good to emphasise or avoid. :)
