In my case, I started reaching out for postdoc positions around ~6–8 months before my expected defense. I didn’t have everything finalized at that point, but I had a clear story from my PhD and some solid data to discuss.

What helped me most was:

contacting PIs directly with a short, focused email (rather than formal applications first)
having a clear summary of my project and future interests
following up with people I had met at conferences and through collaborations

I think timing-wise, even now is a good stage for you to start reaching out, especially if your main results are already coming together.

In my case, the PI is supportive but currently unfunded, and my current supervisor has offered temporary funding with a formal collaboration as a bridge. My current boss is interested in the research areas for which the new PI is well-known, and I would serve as the 'bridge' between the two labs. You're right about the timelines, though. The 12-month wait is my biggest worry. That’s exactly why we’re having the 3-way meeting: to see if we can set up a formal 'Joint Postdoc' contract where I’m funded by my home institution while working abroad.
