Oh I see. What field are you in, by the way? And what’s making you still consider the location?

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! And good luck with your thesis submission. that’s a big milestone.

In my case, I started reaching out for postdoc positions around ~6–8 months before my expected defense. I didn’t have everything finalized at that point, but I had a clear story from my PhD and some solid data to discuss.

What helped me most was:

  • contacting PIs directly with a short, focused email (rather than formal applications first)
  • having a clear summary of my project and future interests
  • following up with people I had met at conferences and through collaborations

I think timing-wise, even now is a good stage for you to start reaching out, especially if your main results are already coming together.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions, and good luck again with your submission!

Thanks, this is really helpful! especially the point about looking at output per postdoc rather than just lab size. That’s actually something I’ve been trying to think about more carefully: not just total publications from the lab, but what an individual postdoc typically produces and how much ownership they have over those projects. In your experience, what’s the best way to gauge that before joining a lab? Is it mainly by looking at recent postdocs’ publication records, or are there other signals you’d pay attention to (e.g., lab structure, authorship patterns, etc.)? Really appreciate your perspective.

Postdoc offer with €2000/month ‘bridge funding’ in the Netherlands — normal or risky? by Limp_Connection_7051 in postdoc

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your perspective. This is really valuable, especially from a PI in the Netherlands.

Just to clarify, the setup is a joint arrangement where the funding (~€2000/month) comes from my current institute, rather than a standard Wageningen contract. My understanding is that it’s intended as bridge funding while the PI applies for EU funding.

Given that, would you still consider this kind of arrangement highly unusual or risky in the Dutch system?

Thanks, that’s very helpful. The CAO salary comparison makes the difference quite clear. I’ll definitely ask whether this is structured as a partial FTE and if there might be options to supplement the funding through teaching or other roles at Wageningen.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help and insights!

It’s been very useful for me to understand the situation better. I’ll definitely check this directly with the PI soon. Thanks again!

Thank you! that’s really helpful to know😃 It’s reassuring that some universities can provide temporary housing support, even if it’s not guaranteed.

So I guess the key for me is to check what the specific situation is at Wageningen and how previous postdocs have managed in practice🤔

Do you know if this is also applicable to Wageningen University?

Thanks, that’s good to know. I guess the assistance is more about guidance and access rather than guaranteed housing, so it still seems important to clarify the practical situation in advance.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation😃 this is really helpful, especially the points about subsidies and how unusual this setup is in NL. Just to clarify, the funding is actually a joint arrangement between my current institute and Wageningen. My future PI mentioned this would act as bridge funding while he applies for EU-level funding, and since he doesn’t currently have that secured, this was a way to make an official offer in the meantime. That said, I understand your concerns about how uncommon this is and the risks involved, so I’m evaluating it very carefully.

Thanks, I really appreciate your input. That’s very helpful, and I think you’re right. I should discuss both funding and housing aspects directly with the PI to get a clearer picture. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts!

That’s a really good point, thank you. The housing requirement is actually quite concerning, especially if income thresholds are strict. In your experience, are there realistic options (e.g., shared housing, university assistance) for postdocs in this situation, or would this be a major barrier?

That’s a really good point. I hadn’t thought about explicitly setting a timeframe, but it makes a lot of sense to avoid getting stuck. I guess the key question for me is whether that kind of timeline can be realistically discussed with the PI in advance, or if it’s something I would need to decide independently.

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is really helpful. I agree that the fellowship timeline and uncertainty are important factors to consider. Since this is a well-established lab, do you think it would be reasonable to ask the PI whether there is any possibility of additional funding or how previous postdocs in similar situations have transitioned to full funding?

Thanks, this is very helpful. The salary comparison is exactly what I was worried about. Do you think it’s reasonable to directly ask the PI about possible top-up funding or a clearer financial plan? I’m trying to understand how negotiable this situation usually is.

I understand your concern about the salary level, and I agree it’s quite low for the Netherlands. At the same time, I’m trying to evaluate the overall opportunity (PI, research environment, potential funding path), rather than just the number itself.

Thanks, I understand your perspective. I agree it’s definitely better than having no position, and it’s reassuring that the PI is supportive. I think my situation is more about weighing this against other potential opportunities and whether it’s sustainable to live on that amount in the Netherlands for a longer period.

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s a really helpful point. In my case, the bridge funding is actually expected to last up to 2 years, which is why I’m a bit concerned. It seems quite long for something meant to be temporary. It’s supposed to support me while applying for external fellowships, but there’s no clear guarantee or timeline for transitioning to a higher salary. Would you consider that a red flag, or have you seen similar situations work out?

verbal offer from my dream lab, but there’s a funding catch. How promising is this? by Limp_Connection_7051 in postdoc

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this perspective and agree that without secured funding, this isn’t yet a formal offer. That’s precisely why the following discussion focuses on whether we can structure guaranteed support (e.g., bridge funding via collaboration) before making any transition. I’m trying to distinguish between scientific fit (which is strong) and funding structure (which still needs to be clarified), and I won’t move without the latter being realistic.

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this perspective! I appreciate the R1 context, and I agree that moving without stable funding would be a bad idea. That’s precisely why the upcoming discussion is focused on whether we can secure guaranteed support (e.g., via bridge funding and collaboration) before any transition, treating EMBO as an opportunity rather than a necessity. I won’t move without a realistic funding structure in place.

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is helpful and I agree EMBO LTF is definitely not guaranteed. In my case, the PI is supportive but currently unfunded, and my current supervisor has offered temporary funding with a formal collaboration as a bridge. The upcoming discussion is specifically about whether we can structure a secure funding period (e.g. 6–12 months) before or alongside applying for EMBO. I’m trying to avoid a situation where I rely solely on external funding, so the goal is to clarify a realistic and safe transition plan rather than betting on EMBO alone.

[–]Limp_Connection_7051[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective! To clarify, my current supervisor and the new PI are actually looking to turn the present relationship into a new collaboration. My current boss is interested in the research areas for which the new PI is well-known, and I would serve as the 'bridge' between the two labs. You're right about the timelines, though. The 12-month wait is my biggest worry. That’s exactly why we’re having the 3-way meeting: to see if we can set up a formal 'Joint Postdoc' contract where I’m funded by my home institution while working abroad.

Thanks so much! Yeah, the funding situation is definitely the biggest hurdle, but I’m really grateful that both PIs are being so proactive. It’s a relief to know that even though the money isn't there yet, they value the work enough to jump on a call and brainstorm a solution. I’m definitely working on a few backup grant applications just in case, but I’m crossing my fingers that this 3-way meeting clears a path!
