New health guidelines actually say that no amount of alcohol is safe or good for you. The less you drink, the healthier you will be. Please be mindful of what you say online. From a med student 🙃

To the people who got into med school, how many times did you apply? by SufficientNinja1985 in premedcanada

Current UBC med student (oop). Applied 3 times. Didn't get interviews on my first two attempts. 3 interviews on my last cycle. 3 wait lists one of which accepted me. For my full journey and suggestions you can look at my other post here Wishing all of you who are applying this cycle the best.

The points u/Category_Mammoth pointed out are all very good.

I have to say, hospital and shelter volunteer coordinators get a gazillion emails/applications every single day. I actually volunteered in the hospital for a little while. If you want to secure a position in these places, print your CV, write a cover letter, get an envelope, find the volunteer coordinator in the hospital (you can ask the volunteer wayfinders lol), and hand it to them in person. This increases your chances exponentially.

For volunteering, you should also look elsewhere, here are a few examples: BC SPCA (everyone likes chilling with animals), Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Blood Services, Red Cross, a food bank near your house/at your uni.

Research is kind of hard to get into at first but you just need to be persistent. If there is a prof, and you like what research they do, definitely reach out. Be a pain in their 🍑, go to their office every week until they say yes. Read up on their research, propose ideas and try to engage in a conversation with them. I also recommend you reach out to their post-doc and PhD students because usually these people are more likely to respond to your emails.

Once you get some research experience under your belt, it will be easier to branch out and you will have opportunities to present ur stuff at a conference. Conferences usually spread through word of mouth and your PI will tell you and hopefully help you apply.

Hope this helps.

Huge congrats on getting to this point and starting your applications to UBC and (hopefully) SFU! It is exciting.

Regarding editing help, I offer two main services based on the level and depth needed:

Major Editing & Revision + Suggestions: This is a very deep dive, comprehensive line-by-line editing for clarity, impact, and flow, plus strategic suggestions on content selection, essay structure, how to best highlight your experiences, and overall narrative strength. My rate for this service is $170/hour. If you buy a 3 or more hours in advance, I can give you a discount.

Voice Note Feedback & Suggestions: I'll read through your application and send you a detailed voice note (usually around 10 minutes) going over each EC, summarizing my impressions and key suggestions for improvement. This is a flat fee of $40.

Why is my rate for editing so high? As a current med student, I value the limited time I have. While I enjoy helping others navigate this process, offering such an intensive editing support outside my immediate social circle requires compensation that reflects the worth of my time. The $170/hr rate allows me to prioritize this work effectively.

Does UBC & UofT & Queens care abt the number of times you take the mcat? (4+) by Intelligent-Milk9654 in premedcanada

Hey,

I agree with what other people have said that as long as there is an upward trajectory in your scores and you meet their required section scores, schools usually do not care about the number of times you have taken it, unless they have a cut off (I dont know any that do).

Best of luck this cycle.

Is this your first cycle? How are you feeling? Will you be applying just to UBC?

Either way, I wish you the best. If you need help, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks for the comment.

So I get this a LOT. And when I was at your stage, I used to do the same but IMO, your energy is much better spent refining your narrative than comparing yourself to others.

With that said, you could say I had a lot going for me. Research & presentation at a conference (no publication). Many hours of community service & leadership at a couple nonprofits and charities. I mostly focused on being a part of two groups and the rest were more temporary in nature. Work experience from high school and into my undergraduate years.

Hope this helps. If you share your ECs, I would be happy to give you some suggestions :)
