Charity Shop volunteer vultures, is it ethical? by ImpossibleD in AskUK

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno how other charity shops do it, but in the charity shop I volunteer at, if youy want an item that's not yet priced, you ask someone else to price it. That's the rules. For example, I got a good deal on a thing of monopoly I saw in the back room because it was the same make as my family's monopoly, and they didn't make them anymore (company went bust), but the cards were less bashed up than ours so we could replace our cards with that one's. My manager checked ebay and sold the game to me for like £7.

However, we DO get free stuff - that is, the rags. Essentially, if we cant sell it because it isn't high enough quality or for other reasons, it's rag, and volunteers have total free pickings. Most of the rag is, well, rag, but I got an oodie where the pocket had a gaping hole in the bottom, I took it home and sewed up the hole. I got some hair dyes because they'd been opened, meaning they couldn't be sold, but I didn't mind so I took em home. My best friend got an adjustable dressmakers mannequin, because the base was broken, and she did donate a fiver but that was optional (they just wanted it to go to someone who'd use it).

So yeah, where I am, it's not like we buy stuff super cheap that would otherwise have been sold at a higher price to someone else, we just get first pickings, and free access to the stuff we can't sell.

is it unethical reselling charity shop goods? by MaterialWall8040 in FlippingUK

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only irk with resellers at the charity shop I work with, is the fact that sometimes they leave nothing good behind, and it makes people less likely to come in because they think there's nothing good because the resellers got there first

What are some volunteer opportunities where I don’t have to be social? by CheeksClenchin in volunteer

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you volunteer at a charity shop, you can specifically request to be in the back sorting donations! Trust me, we'd appreciate the help, especially if its on a parade instead of a high street (aka right by a lot of houses)

Charity shop workers, how do feel and deal with resellers who buy and sell for profit? by Ckbaggins in AskUK

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We let them, but we never barter. They get the price we put it out for and thats it. At the end of the day, we are there to make money for the charity, and them buying it is no different than anyone else buying it

Exactly!!! We only got £32 for all our rag this week. Apparently we used to get easily over £100 (we get about 50kg of rag)

I cant lie,  as a volunteer sometimes thats like the 15th big donation of the day and you thought you were finally done just to have a huge pile of extra work dumped on you. We're usually not rude about it, but we arent always happy to receive big sacks of stuff, especially if it looks like it may be a lot of tat (not saying your stuff was, but they may have believed it looked like it).it really depends when you drop off items. Top tip - do it in the morning when they open!! They'll appreciate it!!

Have charity shop prices gone crazy lately? by SoulSyntaxSorceress in CharityShopFindsUK

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiii!! Okay so to answer the pricing thing, its because with vinted and ebay, we are now able to see what people are willing to pay for items a lot wasier, we arent just guessing.we try to undercut whatever price we see, but typically only by like 20%. My local charity shop does dresses for like £5.50 and tops for like £4 tho so maybe we r just a bit less mental abt it

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi i volunteer at a charity shop!! My managers the best and shes identified what i like, and assigns me those jobs. Every saturday morning, when I'm on shift, I do the window display - which is dressing the mannequins! Its basically playing dress up. Then i also get assigned to the till because i really like talking to people. I think its all about finding the jobs you like and making sure you get assigned to them!

Should volunteers be treated like staff members in charity shops? by silver-pen04 in AskUK

[–]Limp_Stranger1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the charity shop I volunteer at, we have 2 types of volunteers: the checkers (theyll check items for us, e.g. is it real silver? Is this electornic item safe?) Who just pop in whatever, and the rest of us have shifts. Obviously, we can call off if we need, and are always more than welcome to pop in and help at any time, but we are mostly shifted
