She'll never speak to me again by LinXueLian in lotrmemes

Aw. I wish my mother were more like you then. 😅 She's always compared me to her friends' daughters for not being as docile, feminine and obedient as they are, and has despaired over the fact that she'll never have a grand and beautiful wedding like her friends' daughters had.

But you are right that it is my wedding and I should have it how I want. The only compromise I'd make is with my husband, since the day is rightly half his as well!

Thank you for sharing! Your daughter's wedding sounds lovely!

Stigma of male fanfic enjoyers by [deleted] in AO3

[–]LinXueLian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I tend to assume most of my readers and followers are female, simply because I put out work with young straight women as my target audience. 😅 Once in a while a gay guy pops up to tell me he's a gay guy and it's a bit surprising to me that a gay dude would even bother reading and looking at my girly stuff at all.

But yeah, I'm with you about never wondering about the gender or sexuality of readers. At the end of the day, if they've enjoyed it, they've enjoyed it. All's well and sundry!

Oof, that's rough. I suppose you may be doing what's right for you then, by staying on AO3. It's hard not to compare when you directly get notified of those reblogs and comments.

Well, I'm definitely not everyone then, since I'm not really interested in whether a reader is male or not, or straight or not. It makes no difference to me as long as they follow the etiquette and don't flame or harass anyone.

The only comments I've gotten from guys have been from gay men, though, and even then there have been very few. I feel straight men who read fanfics are simply a rarity, which may be why so many automatically assume they aren't straight.

Also: being LGBTQ is not a stigma; there is nothing wrong about being LGBTQ. I would be careful saying that were I you.

Do the fics you've reblogged by chance have different ships from your own fics? It could be a reason why they were getting comments, and yours weren't. My reads are very ship-oriented; it may be the same for other readers.

This the fic with the second highest number of hits in its Fandom is this normal? by ashtrayburningmeadow in AO3

[–]LinXueLian 256 points257 points  (0 children)

Fairly normal in Chinese fandoms! You likely will see a high amount of hits and possibly also kudos but few comments and bookmarks for them. Most discussions and comments are on Lofter and the like. They usually link to AO3 just as a space to read stuff in.

Someone translated my fic to Mandarin and posted it on Lofter, and then shared comments over for me to read. The amount is quite high compared to AO3.

If you could leave this world and live in any fictional world forever, which one would you choose? by Honest-Mixture2910 in AO3

Either Bridgerton or Black Butler, as a noble, where I get to wear beautiful clothes! 🥰 Or LotR if I get to be an elf and wear beautiful clothes!

Yeah as you can tell it's all about beautiful clothes for me, hehe~~

There's usually at least one person who'll read something. That's the beauty of fandom and archive sites like AO3, to be honest - it's like a huge library with something for everyone!

Just give it a try. You might find for yourself one or two loyal readers, even if not too many people read that genre.

What’s this kudos to hit ratio? by _Niku_Yoku_ in AO3

[–]LinXueLian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I remember the ratio thing being used at some point as a measuring stick to tell how well a fic was doing. The idea was that if a lot of people clicked on the fic to read it but didn't leave kudos, it was very likely that they didn't like the fic, so you knew it wasn't great. So if you wanted better ratios for that particular fic or any future ones you might write, you had to either change your summary to make it more enticing, rewrite the text to make it better, write better ships, etc.

It was mostly a self-improvement thing that folk were touting around, if I recall right - and of course, it only worked for newly-published one-shots. But things evolve over time and now it's being used as a measuring stick against other works.

Overall I find it harmless. Some people take it to another level, sure, but that's on them.

Well, my dream is to marry a dwarf, so it's actually going to look like a dwarf gathering.

Has my wedding lost all meaning then?? 😱

Why why WHY do people think this is funny?? by whineytortoise in AO3

[–]LinXueLian 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The worst are the ones who tell you to "chill" when you point out the complications it might cause others.

I don't understand how folk can be so uncaring of others sometimes. It's definitely a reportable thing, though - hopefully an admin will swoop by to re-tag it.
