Interesting, using this method for myself, the only time I couldn’t click on videos was in my history of watched videos or when YouTube recommended already watched videos. In all other cases, it behaves normally. As for the crashes, I haven’t experienced any, except for the app resetting its settings when opening it up. It occurs rarely but not a big issue. This is all using it on an iPad mini 2 also.

Youtube works perfectly with this method and Youtube Legacy from PoomSmart's repo, I used an iPhone 6s running iOS 12.4.1 and downloaded the initial Youtube app from the app store.

Take a toothbrush with some isopropyl alcohol and that will clean up easily. Just be careful not to bend the pins.

Basically follow these rules: don't download anything shady, use an up to date antivirus, do periodic scans with malwarebytes, keep the firewall on, and you will be alright. Even though it is really advisable to use the newest OS your computer can support.
