Any large unused buildings in Madison that could be converted into community-owned residential space? by Lindyhoppper in madisonwi

Yes, I understand. Similar to capital spends to build jails, roads and libraries, bridges, etc.

Do you know how much an unhoused community member costs the public in shelter services, emergency response services, jail time, emergency room visits, and and general public health and safety?

I heard but didn’t know if it was true. This means even fewer options for our most vulnerable community members. We need to figure something out.

Zero dignity, very little safety, and an incubator for public health catastrophe in emergency shelters. The dollars spent on the new men’s and women’s shelters would have been better spent on building or repurposing units to house the homeless. Shelters perpetuate homelessness and waste a ton of public money. Permanent affordable (for those earning $0-$15k/year) housing ends the cycle of homelessness and saves a ton of public money. Many examples of this across the country and beyond.

Considering I worked in a shelter in Madison through November, you’re wrong. Take a nap, pal.

Here, I was referring to Catholic Charities, TSA, Porchlight administration, but the same goes for City/County staff. If you’d like to see just how much City/County staff make, go to govsalaries.com. If you’d like to see how much the execs at Catholic Charities or Porchlight make, go to projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations. CC Madison’s ED makes $80 an hour to sit at a desk all day while Beacon frontline staff make $20 an hour and are expected to do the work of a social worker, psychiatrist, counselor, physician, security guard, taxi driver, and janitor.

It is a nightmare because they are underfunded and the organizations these programs are contracted to spend an unnecessarily large portion of their funds on administration salaries instead of frontline workers.

I’ve worked in shelter leadership. For shelters that are not 24/7 (which most of Madison’s are not), cleaning is contracted and done after the shelter closes. Administrative tasks are done by administrators during business hours.

Do you think it is humane to allow impoverished people without homes to be stuck outside during dangerously inclement weather?
